Superman/Batman #43
Give A Dog A Bonus
here's some modern bingqiu band au🙇
They were good.
Not sell-out-a-stadium good, but good enough to get the attention of the Jing Peak Label. And for whatever reason, his boss had forced him to leave his office and scout the new talent. As the next heir to the Jing Peak label, Shen Qingqiu felt this task was a little above his caliber. He’d rather be in his office running numbers, looking for places to skim off the top here and there. The only highlight of the night was getting the “VIP treatment;” he hadn’t paid for a single drink yet and he was on his way to being tipsy.
Shen Qingqiu threw back another shot of bourbon and rummaged in his suit jacket pockets for his cellphone. He squinted at the brightness and tried to find the number to the CEO, ready to write the band off as another group of wannabes. Suddenly, the guitar and drums cut off, leaving the bass player.
Throughout the band’s set, the bass player had often been the odd one out, his notes just a hair out of tune from the rest of the instruments. But alone, notes that once sounded like a monster lurking in the shadows, now hit hot and heavy, electric. Some of Shen Qingqiu’s drunkenness lifted as the bass player plucked his strings faster and faster, making the beat quick and dirty. It was a new sound, something that none of the other bands or singers had signed to their label. Yet, the player’s fingers stumbled over a few notes, interrupting the flow, and he looked like an Otaku; long hair in a sloppy ponytail, thin arms and legs, and shorter than average.
Looking at the rest of the band anew, Shen Qingqiu noted that the others were miles ahead in terms of look and skill. What made bands hot was that each member had their own gimmick. They had to be able to stand out alone, but not too much, accenting the other members of the group. As things stood, it was almost as if the bass player was an extra or a newbie stand-in (the latter more likely). But even so…
