Characters/ships: Briar Beauty/Faybelle Thorn
Author’s notes/Holiday message: Happy holidays!!! Ahh, you had so many of the same ships as me, you have great taste. I hope this story was cute and wholesome for the Christmas season!!
There had to be some sort of big Christmas party happening. Faybelle had searched for one all through the Village of Book End, asking everyone she didn’t absolutely despise (which admittedly wasn’t very many people). Hex, she’d even eavesdropped on Melody Piper and Poppy O’Hair talking about their Christmas plans, and if anyone was going to go partying it would be them. But apparently, the evening was going to be fairy dull. Everyone was going to just stay in with their families or friends (barf), toasting chestnuts or reconnecting over old storybooks. And meanwhile, Faybelle had a girlfriend who was currently getting dressed up to go clubbing, with no club to go to.
Beating her wings, Faybelle fluttered back and forth in the hallway outside of Briar’s room. Ashlynn Ella was out for the evening watching a movie with Hunter Huntsman, so at least she didn’t have to worry about someone else witnessing her shame. But she really did not want to tell Briar that she’d totally lied earlier about having someplace to go tonight. And it wasn’t even just a one-day-kind-of-a-lie either. She’d been promising to treat Briar to something for weeks. Briar had even bought a new dress for the occasion for hex sake! Faybelle was feeling fairy useless. She really was the worst girlfriend ever.
“Faybelle? Are you out there?” Briar’s voice sounded through the doorway, and Faybelle nearly jumped out of her skin.
“Uhh… yeah! I’m here. How’s…. it going?” Oh Grimm, Briar was going to be so disappointed. Faybelle felt her wings starting to beat as they always did when she got nervous.
“Do you want to come in? You’re a real page ripper, getting ready so fast. Ashlynn isn’t here, so there’s no need to wait out in the hallway.”
Faybelle felt her voice rise several octaves to a shrieking decibel. “No, I’m good, I’ll stay here.” She looked down at her fairy blue robe and shivered. She hadn’t bothered getting dressed up or anything, since she knew there was nowhere to go. Well, no parties at least. They could go out to eat, but when they’d been down in Book End the last time, they’d walked by the Princess and the Pea restaurant and Briar had said that she’d prefer to die rather than have to go to a fancy dinner again.
“I’ve had enough with banquets,” she’d laughed, before making Faybelle promise never to take her out to eat for anything other than Burger Kingdom or Chick-Spell-A. So with a fancy dinner off the menu, Faybelle was fairy stumped on anything other than parties as places to take Briar. Besides, it was too late for a dinner now anyway.
“Hey, Briar.” Faybelle attempted to start with more confidence, whacking at her wings to get them to stay still as she leaned up next to her girlfriend’s door. “We’ve been seeing each other for a while now.”
Briar hummed her agreement through the door. Faybelle could picture her now, leaning back in her chair with her mouth full of bobby pins, attempting to wrangle her hair back into some sort of an updo.
“And we’ve been to a lot of parties and stuff together, which I mean is fun and whatever. Some of them were better than others.” Faybelle cringed, remembering the day when Briar had gotten a little too much of some Cham-page-ne and had started singing very butchered nursery rhymes all about how spell-tacular her girlfriend was.
“Remember the first time I took you out?” Briar cut off Faybelle’s train of thought. “And you were so nervous because you thought no one would want an evil fairy at their party.”
Faybelle huffed indignantly. “That’s because before you and I started dating, I destroyed Melody Piper’s turntable and everyone was so sour about it!”
“You did technically push it over on purpose while chanting ‘Rebels Suck’ over and over.”
Faybelle could practically hear Briar shrug through the door. “Okay, so maybe I didn’t have the best intentions back then but that was no excuse for everyone to get their underchants in a twist about it.”
“Is Melody going to be playing at the party tonight?”
Oh spell. Now they were back on track. Faybelle kicked the toe of her boots gently against the door, wondering if it was better to just blurt it out and get it over with. “I was just thinking that it’s pretty tiring to always be going out together all the time. Especially on uhh, Christmas Eve. And people like Melody, well she’s probably going to be home with her dad, and you would have been home too if I hadn’t made plans for you.” A little shiver of guilt ran down Faybelle’s spine, and she leaned her forehead against the door, the beat of her wings now very much stilled. Would Briar have preferred to be home with her mother? She hadn’t thought to ask. Briar complained a lot about how she was tired of always having to follow her mom’s rules and stay on the more straight and narrow, so Faybelle had just assumed…
When the door suddenly opened in her face, Faybelle fell back, wings pinwheeling to keep her from falling. Breathing heavily, she found herself staring right into the face of Briar Beauty, who was smiling gently and… also wearing a robe?
The princess grabbed her hand reassuringly. “Faybelle, I would have been fairy surprised if you really got ready in only ten minutes. You could have just told me we weren’t going out. I don’t mind.”
Faybelle felt her face heating up. Was it normal to feel embarrassed when someone was being so nice to you? “Are you sure you don’t mind?” She glanced down, tapping her boot against the ground nervously. “Because of me you don’t get to go see your mom, and there isn’t even anything to do. It’ll be… boring.” The one thing Briar hated more than anything else.
“I really don’t care. Faybelle, I just wanted to spend Christmas with you. I don’t care what we do.” Briar tilted up the fairy’s face with her free hand and smiled teasingly at her. “Anyways, that wasn’t boring at all just now. You know, you’re a very bad liar.”
If her face got any hotter, Faybelle was sure she was going to actually burn up. She met Briar’s gaze indignantly. “You mean you knew the whole time that there wasn’t any party?”
“I knew all day.” Briar laughed, pulling Faybelle behind her into the room. “I just wanted to see how long you’d keep it up.”
“Son of a witch,” Faybelle muttered, but she couldn’t help but let out a little laugh of relief. It was good to know that Briar wasn’t going to hate her. And if she’d known all day, that meant that she would have had plenty of time to change her mind and go home instead if that’s really what she wanted. “So, what do you want to do now?”
Briar let go of the fairy’s hand and sat down at her vanity, tilting her head playfully. “Hey, that one’s on you. It’s your fault we aren’t going out, so come up with something good.”
Faybelle groaned, slumping against the door. Even if Briar really wasn’t mad, this was still going to be fairy difficult. But she supposed that she did deserve it, after all. Maybe there was a lesson here about not lying to your girlfriend. She was just lucky she’d gotten away with it this time.
In case anyone was interested, YES, I’ll be doing femslash feb again this year!!!
Please please please, in a repetition of last year, send in your femslash ships to me (anon or not anon)! I’ll be doing a similar thing as to last year of writing each ship I receive if I know the fandom, so you would be doing me a huge favor!!
