St Catherine's - the old chapel on the hill at Abbotsbury in Dorset, overlooking the sea. Dedicated to St Catherine of Alexandria (she of the Catherine Wheel) it looks bigger from far away. After a steep climb you find is empty inside, yet still atmospheric, battered by the wind.

It can be dated in style to the late 14th century, sturdily built of the local golden buff limestone. The walls are high and heavily buttressed to take the stone vaulted roof. The buttresses and the stair turret were once crowned with pinnacles. There are porches on both north and south walls. In medieval times it would have had stained glass in the windows, and details of the roof picked out in bright colours. At the intersections of the vaulting are bosses carved with foliage and animals.

The Mastersingers of Nuremberg and St Catherine’s Church

St Catherine’s Church in Nuremberg was dedicated in 1297 and formed part of a Dominican convent. It became a centre for illuminating manuscripts and weaving tapestry. After the Reformation, the church was put to profane uses and between 1620 and 1778 it was the home of the Mastersingers of Nuremberg. Statue of San Catharina Da Siena near the castle, Rome, Italy Saint Catherine (1347-1380) was the daughter of a prosperous Sienese cloth dyer. At the age of six, she saw a vision of Christ and thereafter dedicated herself to chastity, penance, and good works. She became much beloved in Siena for selflessly caring for victims of the Black Death.
