I took these series of photo a few years back at my favorite little country church, St Felix in Kinde, Michigan. It was our home away from Home parish when we spend time up north on Lake Huron. (Sadly the church closed with the parish consolidations.) Surrounded by rotating fields of corn or sugar beets, the church boasts a beautiful Victorian rectory, a Lady of Fatima shrine framed by large old cedar trees, and a well manicured cemetery that dates back to the civil war. The cherry on top is an old school playground with wooden see-saws, a leg breaking and warp speed merry-go-round, and a swing set that is off balance enough that the entire contraption nervously rocks. At the time it was perfect leverage with our small children as reward for good behavior, all the while we prayed no one would get too hurt. Located right across the street sits a little farm house where the family would walk over for mass and their dog faithfully followed. He escorted them to the side entrance and sat patiently waiting for the hour to be up for them to return. I felt bad for him in inclement weather, like on the day I took his photo, where it was cold and raining. I had wondered if maybe he was not too bright for his passive disposition despite the elements but now I realize he was, most likely, simply far wiser than myself.
