Married once, and once only, to real estate investor John McDonald from 1960 to 1964, Eartha was naturally a down to earth free spirit who, when not working as an actress or on the road with her cabaret act, was happiest with her daughter Kitt at her property in Beverly Hills (and later Connecticut) tending to her garden and animals. Born in rural South Carolina and orphaned as a child, Eartha found a sense of maternal security in the homes she worked for and took care of herself. "She's a very comforting person, this house," Eartha stated about her Beverly Hills abode. "I like her very much. This is my home. This is what I've paid my dues for. My guts are here." After she acquired some chickens on her land for eggs, Eartha ran afoul with the Beverly Hills city council who demanded she send her poultry packing. Determined to keep her hens, she researched decades old city ordinances and found a long forgotten rule allowing for a certain number of small farm animals on privately owned Beverly Hills land which allowed her chicken coop to stay. "I love my home with its gardens and chickens and pets and friends and books. I planted a large garden, which I keep planted the year round--collared greens, beans, and all the good stuff. I'm a nut on organically grown vegetables and seldom buy canned or frozen." Despite her stage and screen image as a gold digging vamp, the real Eartha was far removed from how the public perceived her. "I'm a dirt person," she once explained. "I trust the dirt. I don't trust diamonds and gold."
