Attached to the blanket swaddling the little girl there was a note, which read:

Dear Lira,

I’m so sorry. They’re making me do this. I know I left suddenly, and I only now have the chance to explain. Seven months ago, the night after Emmaline found out about us, I was confronted by two men who threw a potion at me…I don’t have my powers anymore, and as you know, non-witches are not allowed on the island. Last night, they found me and took my children...our children. They wanted you to raise them, to have people know what you did.

I wanted to tell you, I tried to tell you. I’m sorry. The boy is called Kelsey, the girl is Stacey. 

I wish I could be there and that we could figure this out together. I love you.
