Task 4
An analysis that critically compares a range of research tools, methods and skills.
One of the first things I looked into to research further into my retro idea was a book called ‘Greetings from Retro Design’ by Tony Seddon. The book bases around the 1950′s retro look and compares it to what it was like in the 1930′s and the 1940′s. The books aim was to address that particular statement by surveying the development of graphic design and other elements of editing throughout the 20th century. Timelines for each decade highlight key moments, styles and movements, while profiles or thirty different influential graphic designers are interspersed throughout the book.
I discovered that there were many kinds of different artists, but not many of them stuck out to me as much as I would have hoped due to the fact that they didn’t stick out or correlate with the idea I was going for. In the end I ended up coming across a lot of different games that had a retro look and feel to them that helped me choose the kind of look I was looking for.
The first was a more modern made game called Unravel, which was released in 2015 where you play a small red yarn made character called Yarny, and you take on an adventure along the Scandinavian sights and unravel as you go along. The only reason I took this game into considerations when I watched it was due to the fact that it gave me the idea of fraying the sides of my logo to help and make it look more retro and more realistic, because i realised that if i were to have left it without any fraying then it would’ve more than likely looked unreal.
I thought that after looking at Unravel i had all my ideas set, ready to record my video. However, I looked at other games that were released between the late seventies and the beginning of the noughties. After looking through a few videos on YouTube and doing a little research on Google, I came to realise that there was a large correlation between all the games that i had been looking at. Between games like Pac-Man, Double Dragon, Asteroids and any other old retro styled game, they are all 2D platformed games. This made me decide that I was going to change from my original idea of a video of the logo to a simple stop motion so it would be more 2D like and that it would also have a VHS feel to it, just like the video games seemed to be.
The final aspect that I looked at was clothing. Clothing is a large influence on what can be deemed as retro. When I searched in Google Images at what could be seen as retro clothing, there were a lot of Plaid (flannel) items, although they were all mainly dresses or shirts that seemed to be what was worn back in the 1950′s. Although this was the case, there were also more recent clothing that wasn't plaid as such, but striped retro clothing, which mainly focused around jeans. Asides from the flannel and striped clothing, a lot of denim seemed to appear. Different jackets, jeans and shorts came up, which was what helped me to finalise what my logo idea would be made from. I also decided to bring the plaid idea into it all by giving my denim logo different plaid like patches which would then further the whole idea of it being a retro design.
photos from when i walked all the way to coome hill and back with my friends, i took my camera and made the most of it by taking a few photos that i fell in love with
when my friends and i visited an abandoned radio station/warehouse in MK sometime last year.
My finalised rebranded Logo before and after I had added the patches and filmed my advert. The retro look turned out a lot better than I had expected it to, and in the end I simply bought denim patches from a local store and used an old pair of jeans that I no longer wear, cutting them up to suit my needs. I simply cut out and glued all of the patches on, and although I believed it worked well enough, I still feel as though I could’ve perhaps used more colours to emphasise the ‘retro’ aspect further.

Radio Room
My first experience in the radio room was teaching and compelling, and I fell I love with how it was immediately. I already have some knowledge on using interfaces, mics and Logic Pro, but being in a room that is soundproof and has all of the equipment set up was a lot of fun and it helped me to learn more about how people broadcast and podcast their videos/work.
Below is the instructions that were handed out so all of us were able to set up and work smoothly in the radio room, and personally I believed that these instructions helped a lot as I dived into it, and eventually I learned how to use it all without having to use the instructions.
After that, I went on to record a a podcast with a peer of mine, which is now on the College Hard Drive.
