You slam the car door. Stomp up the steps, hiss under your breath when your keys fall from your purse. As you lean down to pick them up, you can see your breath frozen in front of you. The vapor disappeared, but your anger did not. It was almost Christmas, and yet you couldn't be less in the spirit.
Baku let out a loud sigh as she twisted her key into the door of a decent-sized apartment building. Said apartment belonged to her long-time girlfriend, Star. A little smile appeared on Baku's face at the mere thought of Star. Perhaps she could cure her horrible day? Opening the large wooden door, Baku hesitantly looked around. Her eyes widened when she saw a Christmas tree in the center of Star's apartment. On one side of it, standing happily on a chair, was Star herself, carefully placing ornaments on the fir.
“Oh-- Baku! I didn't see you over there~” The tawny-haired woman chided, flashing a bright smile. Delicately, she hopped off of her perch and greeted her lover with a warm hug. Her dusky-brown eyed mate smiled as well, gratefully returning the hug. Star pulled back to take a look at her, only to frown worriedly. “Are you alright? You look saaaad...” A thin hand flew to her mouth, “Was it something I did? Oh, is it the tree? Did you want to help decorate? Ohhhh man I'm sorr.. I didn't think of thatttt! Uhhh, actually, I did save a job for youuu...”
“No no, it's not you at all, dear. Or the decorations, which are lovely, might I add! Wonderful job.” She felt a bit of her previous anger melt away when the shorter woman blushed a bit at the praise, “I just had a bit of a rotten day.” She put a hand lazily to the back of her neck, her fingernails toying with a few strands of her mouse-brown hair. Without a thought, Star took her free hand and lead her over to the couch.
“Baaaaakuuu~ Tell me everything! I'm sorry you had a bad daaaayy...” Patting her girlfriend's hand in her own, she sat them both down on her loveseat. Her big blue eyes stared into Baku's as she awaited an answer.
“Well...” She began, her eyes searching a bit. “I awoke with a headache, which I had gotten last night. Then, while internally complaining about the pain, I got distracted and burned the breakfast that I was going to bring to you. And ah, what else? Hmm...” She paused for a moment, “I couldn't get much cleaning done today. As you could imagine, I'm rather off my track. I've been doing little things to antagonize myself without even realizing. It's just not been well for me today.” Fixing a lock of hair behind her ear, she sulked her shoulders and looked down to her lap. She was caught off guard when the woman in front of her pulled her into a hug, this one filled with sympathy. They sat like that for a good while. It was all they needed. One hugging the other. No sorries, no verbal sympathy, no offers of sweet food to make the other better. All they needed was to hug. The warm touch said it all, and more.
“What was that job you had for me, might I ask?” Baku whispered finally, breaking the silence. Star instantly perked back up and rushed to a box beside the soft, green tree standing a few feet away from them. She dug around in the contents for a moment, her dainty arms moving back and forth as her hands shuffled through the items. Finally, she pulled a big, bright angel treetop from her box. Standing up once more, she placed it gently in Baku's lap.
“Would you put this on for me? I want to give you the important job.” She blushed a bit and gestured to the chair which she had previously been perched upon. Her girlfriend stared for a moment, her lips parted slightly in awe.
“Yes... Star, I would love to.” Shakily, she got up and crawled onto the little wooden chair, the angel cradled cautiously in the crook of her arm. Star watched as the other woman slowly and precisely perched the final touch on the tree in front of her. They stood back for a moment, in silence, as they looked over their ((mainly Star's)) work. Blue and white, twinkly lights were strung all around the thin branches. Tiny star, candy cane, and traditional round ornaments were hung by thin paper clips. Even a tiny, tiny snowglobe was hung right in front.
“It's beautiful!” Star breathed, biting her lip a little. Baku turned her attention to the softly gaping woman next to her. Her blue eyes shone from the light in front of them, staying wide open as they stared at the sight before her.
“As are you.” She grinned and gently put her arms around her lover. “Merry Christmas, Starmanda Skyward.” With that, she gently kissed her still awestruck mate on the cheek.
Star had, indeed, melted away all of Baku's worries. Just how she always had.
