You're too distracted by the pitter-patter of rain to notice the pitter-patter of paws behind you, the foreboding dog staying in the shadows, slinking along the same path you were taking.
It isn't until a man stops you as you pass him, eyes locked onto something behind you, that you know he's there at all.
"Miss," The man's voice is urgent and panicked, "There's a dog following you. Is it supposed to be there?"
You frown, turning around to see a flash of scruffy black fur dart behind a building you'd just passed, shaking your head, "No, are you sure it was following me?"
"The whole time I was walking towards you," The man is still glancing worriedly at where the dog was hiding, "It's huge, looks pretty dangerous."
Something uneasy pools in your stomach, and you nod tentatively, "Right then. Thank you, by the way, I really appreciate you letting me know."
"Of course," The man finally stops looking for the dog, switching his gaze to meet your eyes instead, "Do you want me to walk you home?"
You're about to wave his concern off, let him know that you were good with dogs so it probably wouldn't be an issue, but you hear a low growl come from behind you, amplifying the feeling in your stomach tenfold.
"Actually," You break the tense silence between you, "That would be nice. Thank you."
As soon as you let the man fall into stride beside you the growling ceases, followed instead by mindless barking, the sound puncturing the air like throwing knives. You flinch at the sounds, swiveling hurriedly to see a beast of a dog barreling towards you. The man beside you instinctively shoves you behind him, giving you a few seconds headstart to take off.
You don’t want to abandon the kind stranger, though, so you grab his hand, yanking him along with you as you begin running.
“Hurry,” You screech, “My building is right there!”
You make it up the stairs to the apartment complex before you feel your grip on the man’s hand slipping, turning back to see him stretched between you and the giant dog. The dog has his leg in a tight grip, jaw clenched around the man’s flesh as he tries holding on to you.
“Just go inside and call animal control, okay?” The man is trying hard not to cry, tears gathering in his eyes, “If you can find an umbrella or something to hit it with, that’d be great.”
You rush inside, intent on monitoring the situation through the great glass doors once they’re closed, but you watch in horror as the dog lunges for the gap between the front doors, slipping inside the building a second before the door shuts and leaving the man outside to hobble up the stairs after it.
You back against the wall behind you, slowly sliding sideways towards the elevator shaft, not registering that the dog has stopped growling altogether. It starts towards you, sending your heart into a terrified frenzy, but merely trots up to your legs, nudging you with its nose towards the secluded elevators.
You hurry to get away from it, stumbling forwards and finding yourself trapped in the elevator lobby. The dog sits calmly before you, but you’d seen the damage that it had done to the poor man still struggling to stand outside, so you don’t let your guard down.
“Please,” You speak earnestly, hoping the dog would pick up on your terrified tone and take pity on you, “Please don’t hurt me. I won’t hurt you, I swear, just please leave me alone. I just want to go home.”
You’re waiting for a flash of recognition in the dog’s eyes, maybe simple terms like ‘please’ or home’ giving the dog a sense of familiarity in you that he wouldn’t betray. Your hand presses the elevator button frantically as you stand there, eyes locked on the dog who looks perfectly content to sit in front of you as long as you’re standing there.
Finally the elevator dings beside you, the doors slowly opening as you try calculating how you’d get inside without the dog following. You slowly slide into the doorframe, knowing the doors wouldn’t shut until you were out of the way, hands out in front of you to hopefully combat any attack that came your way.
The dog only stands, backing you carefully into a corner of the elevator as a soft swear comes from between your lips. Now that neither of you are standing in the doorway anymore, the doors slide shut, leaving you in the enclosed space with the aggressive dog.
As soon as the doors shut completely, the dog isn’t a dog at all anymore, instead growing and morphing in front of your horrified gaze, completely ignorant of the scream that comes from between your lips at the grotesque sight.
You’re even more disturbed by the fact that the dog assumes the shape of your boyfriend, his eyes dark and his chest heaving as you stood on the verge of hyperventilation in the corner.
“Sirius,” Your voice was tentative, not sure if you’d been seeing things right at all, “What the fuck just happened?”
“You almost got hurt,” Sirius said simply, reaching out and pulling you out of the corner of the elevator just in time for the doors to open, “I saved you.”
Your brain whirs at a hundred miles per hour, frantic thoughts trying to convince yourself that you’d just been delusional, that none of this could have possibly happened, that you’d been knocked out at the store or something, and it was all a dream.
But Sirius leads you straight to your apartment, waiting until you’re safely inside and the door is closed to hold you by the forearms, scrutinizing you for injuries.
“Now, you know why I had to step in, right?”
“Sirius, you’re an animagus-?”
“That’s not important. Now, answer me, you know why I had to step in?”
“No,” You try focusing on Sirius and the conversation at hand rather than the terrifying ordeal you’d just been put through, “Why?”
“He was trying to hurt you,” Sirius croons, eyes boring into yours, dripping with concern, “If I hadn’t saved you he would have snatched you up, or mugged you, or touched you.”
“He was just being nice,”
You trail off, your certainty on the matter waning as he coos patronizingly at you, “No, baby. That’s what he wanted you to think, that’s why you can’t trust people like that. You can’t trust people at all, y’gotta stick with me.”
“But what if you’re not there with me?” Your brain fills with horrific images, your mutilated body laying on the ground because someone had taken advantage of you, “What do I do?”
“It’s okay baby, I’ll help you. I won’t ever leave your side, I’ll keep ‘ya safe.”
