Some more pictures from last weekend's British Wool Show. These are little snippets of the huge Stamford Bridge Tapestry Project (read more about it at stamfordbridgetapestry.org.uk). They were there with giant frames, embroidering away, and you could buy little kits to replicate your favourite bit at home. The details are brilliant, like the dramatic pose and blood splatter of the guy in the first image being hit by an arrow ↘ #tapestry #embroidery #stamfordbridge #battle #thread #craft #britishwool #stitch #paintwiththread (at York Auction Centre)
Chelsea 3 Arsenal 2 - 18 August 2018
Always a fixture to look forward to, new boss Maurizio Sarri’s first PL game at home and against one of our London rivals too.
Also, of course, the fans’ first visit to Stamford Bridge of the season and for me personally, my first visit to my new seat in the Shed Upper. And it was from there that a fan inspired and funded banner was displayed celebrating 15 years of Roman Abramovich’s reign as Chelsea owner. Fifteen trophies in that time too!
With the same lineup that started against Huddersfield we set about our business and, frankly, we were all over them. So good to see. The first goal came from Pedro after Marcos Alonso had put him into space with only Petr Cech in goal to beat.
After 20 minutes we were two up, Alvaro Morata showing some skill to skip round the defender after taking the pass from Cesar Azpilicueta. We were in dreamland!
But there were danger signs, Arsenal had slipped through our defence and seen two shots on goal fly over the crossbar. Nervous times as one, then a second equalising goal hit the back of our net. All square at half time.
But thankfully, our heads didn’t drop as both sides looked for that winning goal. We made some changes; Eden Hazard came on for Willian and new loan signing Mateo Kovacic came on for the solid Ross Barkley. Eden was Eden and Mateo was very impressive on his first start, confident and assured in his passing. Our final change came on 75 minutes when Olivier Giroud replaced Alvaro Morata.
Both sides were creating chances but with just 10 minutes to play the ever influential Eden Hazard twinkle toed his way with the ball into the box, laid it on for Marcos Alonso who slid the ball past Petr Cech from close range.
Scenes at the Matthew Harding end of the ground as fans and team alike celebrated Alonso’s cheeky winner.
A solid start to the season with two wins out of two, let’s hope it continues with our trip to Newcastle at the weekend.
