Hey, pardon my ignorance but I have been away from the Internet for a while and have returned to see a whole bunch of stuff (and a post you reblogged) about sexist/racist hate against Leslie Jones. What happened?

Well, this has just been what I’ve seen happening and my interpretation. If anyone else (especially a black woman) wants to give their input or needs to correct me on this, PLEASE feel free to do so. *Disclaimer: while I am a WOC, I’m Latina and NOT black so, again this is my interpretation.
Leslie Jones is a wonderful gift to humanity and with the outrage over the new Ghostbusters (which she had a starring role), she received SO MUCH hatred–WAY much more than her white, female costars.
It started on Twitter with her being literally harassed by people (primarily white men) with disgusting, hateful, racist and sexist remarks. Like, she was literally being harassed (and Twitter just let it happen because racism). I won’t go into too much detail, but you can easily find the posts online. She responded to some of them, but mostly she just posted how upset she was and how these people were constantly bombarding her with hateful messages and comments (seriously, some VILE stuff). Like, it was upsetting to watch.
There was a lot of support for her and quite a few hashtags were started up to show support for Leslie. Then, because she is a fantabulous person, her amazing Tweets about the Olympics got her invited officially through NBC to go to Rio, and she met with a lot of the athletes out there and it was amazing to watch.
Again, because people can’t stand seeing a strong, successful black woman enjoying what she does and doing it so well, someone then hacked her and released a lot of her personal information as well as nude photos.
Last I heard, the FBI is investigating the hack, but this is just another example of hatred that goes beyond sexism and into racism. She was targeted because of her race, and it’s beyond disgusting.
Again, I could go on and on, but yeah, this is basically what happened. Leslie Jones was the victim of a hate crime because she is a black woman who is confident in who she is and there are people out there that can’t stand that and want to destroy and humiliate her in any way that they can.
