Imagine if Stannis Baratheon HAD marched back to Castle Black. Instead of burning Shareen. Shareen would still be alive, Queen Selice would still be alive. They spend the winter at Castle Black. His army manning the walls when the Night King comes...
Imagine him staring down from the wall as an immeasurable army of the dead draws ever closer, a blizzard washing over the Wall just before them. Imagine Stannis turning to Melisandre for guidance and council, and then realizing she has no real power or wisdom. He is not the Son of Fire that would save them from the Darkness.
