Milestone Monday
On this day, January 31 in 1901, Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters premiered at the Moscow Art Theatre, under the direction of seminal Soviet theater practitioner, Konstantin Stanislavski, and Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. To commemorate the premier, we present the Limited Editions Club production of Two Plays of Anton Chechov: The Cherry Orchard; Three Sisters, published in New York in 1966 in and edition of 1500 copies signed by the illustrator.
The book was designed by Bert Clarke and printed at Thistle Press, a fine press outfit in New York operated by Clarke and his business partner David Way. Both Clarke and Way had been production managers for Limited Editions Club at different times in the late 1940s. Clarke chose 12-point English Monotype Garamond for the text. Hungarian artist Lajos Szalay provided eight full-page tempura paintings and sixteen line drawings to illustrate the edition.
The book is quarter bound in black capeskin stamped in gold with boards covered in woven fabric with a black and red paisley design.
