DogCast Radio Podcast:Episode 15 - Age proof your dog and Dog Lady
I'm so glad that years ago I was given the advice to teach my dog signals for every command - and "good dog". Now that Buddy's very hard of hearing, without our signals we would find it very hard. As it is we can still have fun, still work as a team, and he can still know I'm pleased with him. Today we've been practising a few things like speak, march (he lifts a foot when I do), twirl (spin), wait, distance recall, and seeing him enjoy working his brain, and watching his delight at knowing he did a good job is absolutely priceless. He may be 14 years old, but no one's told him so, and fortunately there's no signal for that, so in his heart he's still a pup.
Here's the episode I got the advice about signals from, and no matter how young your dog is there are things you can put in place to make his old age as easy as possible.

The greatest fear dogs know is the fear that you will not come back when you go out the door without them.

Man has great power of speech, but the greater part thereof is empty and deceitful. The animals have little, but that little is useful and true; and better is a small and certain thing than a great falsehood.
