Hello, it's The Mountain Goats, at 10:24 on Sunday the 20th of December, and this is a horror story
" i thought i heard bells ringing,
but then i remembered that i no longer knew
what bells sounded like
i thought we'd maybe strike up a conversation
'til bad luck cruised by on his ten-speed bike
i got real cold and i grabbed my coat
and i saw that the ringing
was coming from your throat
what are you saying anyway? "
these are the only lyrics that matter
re: stardusting i took the opposite from the song compared to the other people (not to say they’re wrong, more to point out how neat jd’s lyricism is). i figured bells were wedding bells, probably after the alpha couple got married. they’re so blinded by their own need to make this dead end, already failing relationship work that they’ll take all the warning signs for celebration, even when those warning signs are anything the other says, even when that’s what the point of a relationship is. they’re doomed not because they never knew, but because they refused to look outside their own idea of a perfect joyous marriage to see that they were already fucked; in that way, it’s a horror story because it’s the dawning realization (from the listener) where they know how it ends, but can’t do anything to fix it, because both parties are too wrapped in theirselves to care
ooooooh very... haunting take. i like it. it kind of reminds me of that post about characters who are dead before they die? like they're dead from the start because they die during the course of the story, and because it's a story they're forever trapped that way. hold on
i'll put the link to this in the comments for anyone using a screen reader.
the song is a horror story not only because of what happens in it, but also because of the listener's necessarily helpless witnessing of the story.
wow. okay doghart you've got it going on this is making me think big thoughts about narratives.
I thought I heard bells ringing,
But then I remembered I no longer knew what bells sounded like.
I thought we'd strike up a conversation
Till bad luck cruised by
On his ten-speed bike.
I got real cold and I grabbed my coat
And I saw that the ringing was coming from your throat.
What are you saying anyway?
Re: Star Dusting. I agree with what was previously said about the song but wanted to point out one detail that stood out to me. The bells coming from the partner make me think of alarms, but also something like a school bell. A sound that demands action, movement but "then I remembered I no longer knew what bells sounded like". How can you act when you can't identify the stimulus? You are not only losing your connection to someone else but also reality, signals, and yourself.
this is a great connection!! and like. wow. adds a lot of layers to the song.
thanks for sending this comment in! i really like it!
