this is gonna sound stupid but i was talking abt this with a friend of mine the other day, but you can really tell when ppl view the concept of being transgender as a completely binary experience based on the way they do trans headcanons

#for me (trans) it’s about whether or not the character Smacks of Gender #like. is this character really invested in Performing their gender?#or are they accused of not performing their gender ‘correctly’ according to the rules of their society?#does this character struggle to express their true emotions and desires/feel generally controlled by others or their society?#if the answer to any of the above is ‘yes’ then i will DEFINITELY be considering the character through a trans lens #whether i come up with a specific trans headcanon is dependent on the situation #but i can often see a single character as being transfem transmasc or nonbinary (in many different ways)#because being trans isn’t a binary or even really a spectrum because we have such significant shared experiences #all of the things i look for in characters that remind me of the trans experience could apply to trans people of all genders #it’s obviously fine to HAVE specific headcanons - but so many people just base them on stereotypes #and it is EXHAUSTING
