One of my hyper fixations is the stock character of the majokko (魔女っ子) or magical girl in Twentieth Century Japanese media. I’m interested in Star Virgin because it represents the shift that occurred in the genre as the ‘80s became the ‘90s, or in Japanese terms as the Showa (昭和) era became the Heisei (平成) — the collision of the magical girl with the tropes of tokusatsu (特撮), which literally means special effects but represents a genre of storytelling ranging from Godzilla (ゴジラ) to Power Rangers.
