#Repost @toocoolformiddleschool with @get_repost ・・・ It’s kind of cool to see when one of your best practices takes off! One thing I’ve been doing for a few years now is something called “Starbucks Time.” I recognized that sometimes my students needed to work independently, without me yapping at them, and without working with a partner. But it kind of felt wrong, like I was being lazy, you know? Then I realized that as a college student I had to sit for extended periods of time in a coffee shop, without talking to anyone, without checking my phone, and without getting too off task when I had the whole internet at my fingertips. It was a skill and a discipline I had to practice! . So now when we are doing writing projects I give my students time to practice this skill as well. They can listen to whatever music keeps them motivated, and I even let them take out a snack if it’s not too distracting. We pretend that we’re at a Starbucks where we don’t know anyone, so there’s no talking. . We usually do this for about 15 minute sessions. I’ll check in with students at this point and see where they’re at, and if they need more instruction. I have 6th and 8th graders, so I feel like working independently like this every so often is good practice for them. . I first posted about this in 2017 (and I mention it a lot in stories) but recently I’ve seen lots of teachers trying it! It’s cool to see that one of the things my students really like is working well in other classrooms.
