i'm considered the anime friend among my groups, which surprised me because i thought i watched a standard amount... i guess not LOL but here are some i like and i'll speak a little on them
Bubblegum Crisis
this is one of the more formative things to me, to the point where one of my chosen names is that of the main character's, Priss. I've always liked robots and mech animes and i appreciate this one for its radical anti war and anti capitalist message as well as being a feminist piece of media. of course it has its shortcomings, i could do with less of the sexualization, but it doesnt deter from the story so I tolerate it. Even though it was cancelled, i still think it achieves what it wanted to. The spinoffs can be extremely hit or miss, with Bubblegum Crash and A.D. Police Files being 2 of the worst animes I've seen, but Parasite Dolls being another high praise title of mine and it's reboot, Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 having extremely compelling design even if I disagree with a lot of the changes. A lot of the machines I design draw a heavy amount of inspiration from anything set in this universe, designs like the Doberman are among my favorites⬇️👇
I also own physical copies of all the Grand Mal comics!
Parasite Dolls
Speak of the devil, Parasite Dolls is another extreme favorite of mine, with a strong political message with regards to the government and police force among other things. Only 3 episodes, it packs a heavy punch in only an hour and a half. It has some of the most influential art to me as well, the way I draw faces being influenced in particular by this one. Not much to say that wasn't already said for the original BBGC, but I still recommend it heavily and you can find the whole thing on youtube and aniwave, usually claiming to only be one episode, but all 3 are there.
Wolf's Rain
I'm due for a proper rewatch on this one. Based on a russian fairytale and set in a future post apocalypse as the world runs low on resource facing a frigid end. All about survival and begrudged faith in one another. the music in particular is extremely beautiful, the action is well put together and i much enjoy how the characters are capable of failure and recovery in a way i dont find particularly contrived.
Galerians: Rion
Do you notice a theme with me yet? mostly the appeal to me is the art direction, it reminds me a lot of some of the media i grew up on like Clock Tower 3 and Gravity Rush due to the graphics. I will forever have a soft spot for undergroup unethical lab what does mental enhancing experiments, I think I've always liked that since Secret of Nymh lol. Theres probably a lot more to say, but i have't seen this in a fair while. Rion's vocal performance is something to behold, listen to those screams!
Texhnolyze
im not done with this one, i'm maybe less than half way through watching it with my friend, but it's extremely well made. Like Rion, Ichise's vocal performance is immaculate and has some really well done, guttural, painful screams too. Ichise's acclimation to his prosthetics is extremely engaging to me as well and I largely enjoy the approach this story has towards cybernetic implants and the emotional state of unwilling recipients.
Fist of The North Star
*record scratch*ฅʕ•̫͡•ʔฅ hold on.. this one is set in the 80's!? Like Bubblegum, this one also has a large influence on me, it just lacks robots and the exact pseudoscience im into lol. the ORIGINAL anime adaptation isnt actually that good and is full of filler up until episode 23, specifically it takes til episode 23 to finish the first CHAPTER of the manga. After that though it pretty much smooth sailing if you dont like filler. I enjoy Kenshiro a lot as a protagonist, especially in the manga. Often time it can come off as silly, and it doesnt shy away from that, while also having action and dynamics i genuinely enjoy. There are some major deaths that I think are put together in engaging ways and battles i still think back on, like the battle at the dam or Kenshiro V Jagi. One of my favorite characters ever comes from here and if you look at my OCs you can pin point exactly which ones are inspired by this rascal👇
Dororo 2019
OOOOH MY GOD. OOOH MY GOD OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD. MY GOODNESS WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SOTRY!!!! I watched the origianl 1969 version, which honestly I don't recommend much unless you enjoy animation history or Tezuka properties. I dont know if the original manga is any better than that, but it likely is, I havent read that. BUT THE 2019 VERSION IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PASSION DRIVEN PIECE OF ART genuinely like of everything in this list, this might be unarguably what I recommend the most to watch. The handling of Hyakkimaru's disability and character journey is done with so much care and respect. The mutual love and loyalty between him and Dororo is heart melting. The way they address the people living in war torn lands, the desperation framed not as self imposed depravity but acknowledged as sheerly being abandoned by the lords what were meant to manage the lands you live in because of their pride and false notions of honor. IF ANYTHING, IF AT ALL, this is what you should add to your watch list.
D.N.Angel
idk. this show is bad and at times really weird. THE LAST 7 EPISODES ARE CRAY AND MAKE IT EXTREMELY WORTH IT. besides that, there IS actually some very compelling moments and the mesh between the 2D animation and cinematic shots of CGI environments is very captivating to me. if you can sit through it being a little immature and poorly written every so often, I think you can really consider this a treat to behold. not to mention for any warrior cats heads, this is where the intro song for SSSWarriors came from. There are some concepts that, while I think they arent explored to the full extent they could have been, open the doors for others to explore anyways. The Agate Links or Mio Hio's story arc in specific come to mind. The Freedert arc as well I found compelling.
Ask Dr. Rin
speaking from the heart here when I say this is the better sailor moon. unfortunately the translation i was watching falls apart and becomes incomprehensible, the upload on internet archive might be better but im still working through to get where i left off. hopefully it doesnt succumb to the same fate. Meirein's feng shui powers is such an incredibly endearing thing to me and the fact that the other special characters are also just people who specialize in different forms of divination is an awesome concept to me. Also ummm 1 billion bonus points for canon explicit lesbian and for getting real damn close to having a tr4nsf3m character
at least she maintains instant feminization for the sheer act of doing tarot readings
Mononoke
disclaimer for this one, there are racial biases in it, the moment a character has brown skin, they are designated as a bad person. So much so that the one brown skinned character who wasnt bad would later have a character appear to look exactly like her in order to be a bad person. With that acknowledged, the rest of the show has crazy intricate and always moving art. The pacing is excellent, sometimes intentionally confusing in a way that is extremely memorable. The pacing and atmosphere is intoxicating. action and consequence are just so impactful. They are working on a trilogy of movies for this right now, i dont know if anything more than the first one is out yet, but as far as i can tell its done away with the racial issues its dealt with in the past, which i hope means something for a brighter future on this.
thats enough anime tho what other shit exists... HELP I DONT KNOW
Reboot 1994
I DONT KNOW IM SCARED WHAT IS THIS go to my search bar and look up '#matrix posting' i dont really need to talk about this at all. I will tho! its very charming all in all, season 4 sucks big butts tho. This is, despite its looks, a historic piece of media, preserved in the smithsonian even. Reboot is the first long form CGI animated piece of media! for season 1 and most of 2, its very much so formatted as a saturday morning cartoon type show, but later starts to take itself more seriously and becomes more... well.
i like this show so much it makes me sick and i dont know if its good or not. but people i show it to seem to like it, if that means anything. dont talk to me about Matrix hes not my toy anymore.
Galaxy High
this is one of the MOST charming, sweet and succinct little cartoons ever. it never tries to be anything more than it is and it is comfortable being itself. it never hurts to just put on any episode and enjoy, because all of it is is enjoyable!
Sopranos
i mean what more can you say? I really need to return to this one and finish it, we got to a certain scene with Melphi which I wont spoil and dropped it not long after that, not because of the show itself but moreso because a usually member of our watch party just became less available. I enjoy a lot of the character dynamics at play would like to divest more of my time and attention towards such portrayals. A.J. is my favorite character.
Wild Grinders
dont watch this show its bad. DO watch the content PRIOR to it being a nickelodeon show, thats good and theres not much of it. this character is named Emo Crys👇
his name is emo crys ⬆️ isnt that nice? its emo crys ☺️ his full name is emo crys and they address him as such wow isnt that nice his name is emo crys
Columbo
this show is copaganda and peter falk is a detestable person in more ways than one, we know this because he plays one of the most famous and well loved policemen in history. with that out the way, i find it pretty engaging. after jack cassidy dies, it becomes a pretty different show and the more contemporary seasons are to me less engaging and with cornier writing, though i would say the final 2 episodes are great exceptions to the rule.
SnowFall
a mutual or former mutual recomended this to me a while back and i only just started it after i finished columbo. Despite only having finished the first episode, i have seen more of the later seasons because of that friend so I know i like it through and through. the sheer artistry at play is simply astounding, capturing every complexity of emotion and humanity, wasting no part of every shot. this is an extremely poignant art piece and already something i can say is an important watch. honestly fuck how heavily i recomended dororo earlier watch this shit instead if ur gna watch anything, im not editing that part because i want u to know that this easily dethrones everything else here.
i forget every movies i have ever seen
Paprika ew i just realized the subtitle says that
first things first i have a very complex relationship with this movie, its one of my favorites ever and if youve seen it and you read my longer posts about like fat acceptance you'd probably be confused about this. I REALLY. REALLY. HATE HOW THIS MOVIE IS ABOUT LIKE ACCEPTING WHO YOU ARE AND NOT BEING NEEDLESSLY DISCRIMINATORY YADDA YADDA YADDA AND THEN TURNS AROUND AND METANARRATIVELY AND METATEXTUALLY TREAT TOKITA LIKE SHIT
YES there are some pieces where i can level and agree in certain moments the frameworks are highlighting a societal issue but more often than not they are playing him with such notions of disrespect that hes more of a charicature instead of a demographic the movie is claiming to accept. plus tbh this movie i cant watch too often because it can trigger my ED 🤪
i digress, IGNORING that, i think its a fun movie and everything directed by this guy is stunning REST IN PEACE idk i still dont want to dwell on this movie even if i like it
HONORABLE MENTIONS
feh... image cap.... well basically there is also ponies in my heart and breaking bad and malcom in the middle and ummmmmm who knows. ORANGUTAN JUNGLE SCHOOL BITCH
i imagine something kind of chunky (maybe velcro?) as for motifs lots of bugs,, i give you creative liberty though :)
i completely ignored the velcro aspect on purpose because i instantly knew.
CROCS
avoided putting too many charms on them so that i could leave it up to you, but pairing this type of shoe with like some chunky socks or leg warmers would be so dope i thinks
