WiP Wednesday -- Untitled #5
Today, a scene I had to cut when I changed Mateo's storyline so drastically for Transitions:
An invitation that they studiously ignored. “Yes, well, leaving a help wanted ad asking for a fish to be delivered to the troll on the beach would be a bit obvious.” She snickered at that, and they couldn’t help smiling a little. “I don’t know,” said the Solanen, a sly smile curling her lips. “It seems like a rather fin-tastic solution for the quandary.” Mateo’s smile widened. “I’m sure I could do a betta fish pun than that.” “Are you saying you intend to school me?” “I’m not herring you argue otherwise.” “I suppose any fin is possible if you don’t trout yourself,” she grinned, clearly enjoying herself. To be fair, she wasn’t the only one. “Some people don’t like fish puns,” Mateo smirked, “but these are kraken me up!” Even as she rolled her eyes, Callie said, “Can’t help that even the oldie but goody ones are gilliant.” They stared at one another before both burst into giggles. “Ah, Yoba,” sighed Mateo as they finally got themselves under control. “It’s been far too long since someone would pun with me.” “Clearly, you haven’t kept the right company then,” she grinned. Mateo sobered at that. “You’re not wrong.”
Look, I love puns, and I won't apologize for it.
5k Hits?!
I've mentioned time and again how I never really expected Choices to garner much in the way of attention. It's an incredibly niche fic (it combines a bunch of mods that only a fraction of players for an eight-year-old game are aware of), and yet it continues to chug along.
Over the weekend, Choices passed the 5k hits mark! 👀 I very much want to do something to celebrate this, but this is the time of year when I'm constantly on a dead run. Writing a bunch of fics for another Reader Request week just isn't in the cards right now.
However!
I do have a bunch of cut scenes that I've yet to post to my What Could Have Been series. It wouldn't take much at all to give one a spit polish and toss it onto Ao3. So, with that in mind, I thought I'd run a poll to see if one in particular caught anyone's fancy.
Which one of these fics would y'all be interested in?
Spin the Bottle (takes place after the Flower Dance)
Sterling's Three-Heart Event
Mateo delivering an injured Callie to the Stardrop Saloon
How to Shoot a Combo (Callie and Sterling playing pool back in Spring)
Life's a Beach (a scene that consists almost entirely of puns)
Confronting Mateo
Couple of quests had popped up on a rainy day, so Callie made her way to the mines to fulfill them and finally triggered this scene:
Not gonna lie, that bottom line from Mateo was the moment I decided they were my Callie's BFF. I identify with some things a bit too strongly.
This line here? First time I played through, I thought it a throwaway line. Dear readers, let me assure you that it is not, and the scene that follows can be missed if you're not careful.
Don't want to spoil things too far, but it's a good scene.
Don't miss it.

Rival Hearts
Since Callie already caught and wed Sterling, I opted to turn on the Rival Hearts Events for Mateo and Aideen. (Mateo has certain romance events that do not trigger with Polysweet installed, so if and when I get around to pursuing them, I'm looking at doing a different save at some point).
Mateo makes a strong first impression (though not necessarily a great one) by nearly running Aideen over as they flee the cave system.
She is not amused.
As soon as they disappear, Aideen feels the need to complain to Callie.
Callie is fond of both Mateo and Aideen. She also woke up that morning and chose violence.
Famous last words, my dear.

Mateo's Heart Event Extravaganza
After getting inundated with drama Heart Events last time, this time she got hit with several again. This time, they all featured everyone's favorite, lovable rogue: Mateo. But since I'm trying to avoid spoiling much, I'll just leave you with a few hints.
First, she went up to the Guildhall to sell off equipment and instead got caught up in Marlon and Gunther's plotting:
Once said plan went off without a hitch, apparently Callie and Mateo decided to hit up the saloon, and along the way the pair stumbled upon Lewis locked out of his house. Mateo managed to use a trick they knew to get him back inside, but he wasn't impressed:
But they did finally make it to the saloon.

A New Face (Kinda)
Another Friday night, another night at the saloon. I understand why Sterling no longer goes, but I do kinda miss Callie and Sterling hanging out here.
But look! Someone's taken over his spot!
Callie will definitely squirrel that little tidbit away.
