“Listen, I’m not saying you can’t keep in touch with them, or whatever. I think it’s probably healthy to...” Im gestures vaguely, the moonlight catching the movement of her hand through the windshield as it throws a silver sheen on the dirt road rolling under their tires. “...to have friends your age. I’m just reminding you who these kids are.” Bringing her fingers to her lips, she bites at the side of her thumbnail before jerking it away with a sudden thought. “And — that they are kids. Dangerous kids, but kids nonetheless. Not exactly prime hunting companions.” Her palm returns to the steering wheel with a dull thud, and Im bites at the inside of her cheek distractedly. If she had a nickel for every time she worried about Claire and her choices, she’d probably have enough cash to send the girl off to college — a turn of phrase Claire was probably sick of hearing. A deep sigh, then a slight wince as a tire kicks up a particularly heavy piece of gravel into the underside of her truck.
“Anyway, are you sure that this is the right road? I’ve been through some backwoods bullshit before, but this might take the cake.”
