Subtle show dont tell in Starfield
Putting this behind a cut as it's a spoiler for the end game story
One of the most tragic things about the story lore of Starfield is the loss of Earth and everything on it. People in game talk about the billions of human lives lost who never managed to escape the planet before it lost it's atmosphere and yes that is utterly tragic and a whole 'nother ball to untangle . ( why couldnt they get everyone off the planet in 50 years? ) The thing though that makes my heart hurt is knowing humanity and some plants we took with us survived, but nothing else did. (Though there is evidence cats survived thanks to a film poster with a girl holding a cat, but they are not in game...yet). So other than that possibility, every single species of fauna is gone. No more tigers, no more labrador dogs, no more elephants, no more raccoons or butterflies. No one thought to create an ark, an actual working one using dna sequencing and stem cell collection? We know cloning tech exists in game. Crucible and Hadrian Sanon confirm this as does cloning the Aceles. So having an arc bank of species could be possible. Terraforming isnt possible due to the ridiculous cost ( spoken about in game) so a new Earth could never be created, but I'm surprised a billionaire never collated their own menagerie when fleeing Earth. Maybe we'll be surprised in a dlc....
On loving someone who's lost everything
Honestly, I get it. Starfield is a game. We play games to escape. We want to be the centre of attention and someone's whole world when we romance them. But I have to say, I think there's something very tender about loving someone who's lost everything.
Barrett loved his husband. He loved him deeply, and he's still mourning and grieving, and to have someone to help pull him out of the wreckage isn't nothing. For having lost someone so important in his life, I don't think that makes him any less deserving of finding love again. In fact, I think there's something beautiful in it. You get to love someone that appreciates every fibre of what love is knowing what it's like to lose it.
I also wouldn't want him to not talk about Ervin. Ervin is a part of Barrett's history. An important part. Not something to be erased or forgotten. Ervin was and is a meaningful part of Barrett's life and deserves to be remembered and fostered.
I love it when Barrett says, "I want to live in this universe. For as long as it takes. With you." It means his love for you isn't any less real or significant than the love he had for Ervin. He's literally choosing you in the now. Humans are capable of holding love for more than one person, especially those who have lost it.
Sincerely, someone who's watched someone close in their life grapple with losing their spouse young and deserves to love again.
Maybe it's just me, but i really not a fan of how Newgame + starts - on the starborn ship that magically appears along with your fancy new armour. Going through Unity magically creates these i guess...but it doesn't make sense. Guess it's going to make what i'm writing a little easier as i dont have to explain each exit from Vectera. Unless i ignore the canon start.
