WELCOME TO CAEDES CORVI, VERA. YOU HAVE BEEN ACCEPTED AS STARLING.
Vera, more than a story of a thousand lives you brought us the story of a singular girl whose wanting has always wanted for more. There was was never anything else Starling could have been but hungry, and I think her very early acceptance of that was her true. I loved how you juxtaposed her first “deaths” as something not done consciously but as a piece of her fate that she’s grown into like a well tailored dress. This line in particular summarizes Starling in a way that I hadn’t thought about before but was awe-struck by, “Why does [the beast] want her to live more than you? More than me?” / Mother scowls, “He does not want her to live, she just does not know how to die.” Soléne is human, this is apparent in her envy of the Caedes Corvi (wearing tragedies like fine silk), and I think that makes her character all the more devastating. To write someone as evil is one thing, but to make me want to try and give her what she wants is another. Her pull is magnetizing and I cannot wait to see her join the others.
