A Woodchuck Wedding: Ch. 9
Back at it on a Tuesday...
So Will finally popped the question to Val, and of course she said YES (as well as 'what took you so long?') so it's time for another celebration for our Mobian friends! But of course you know we can't have a gathering of this magnitude without a little drama or adventure... and frankly I don't think Will and Val would have it any other way. So please enjoy the tales leading up to a Woodchuck Wedding!
Story Teaser: Val isn't the only one who's noticed a resemblance between William and Judge Winston... but when our 'bot friends get an idea, they tend to be more persistent with it. What will they find?
Ch. 9: Tuxedoes and (Family) Ties
In contrast to the tumult of the Wedding Rehearsal and pre-meal Reception, the Rehearsal Dinner went off without a hitch. Gary and Pedro’s cooking was spot-on, and they recruited several of their 'Fab 'bot colleagues to help ensure speedy and accurate food delivery. The entire operation was flawless, so much so that even Ventnor commented positively on the proficiency and professional atmosphere the ‘bots provided. As the meal concluded, the attendees broke off into groups, enjoying final conversations with each other before some started to head back to their rooms to ‘freshen up’ for the other wedding eve 'festivities.’
Dennie Q037 and CC lingered near the doorway, the canine Robian examining Will and Winston as they chatted: “The Judge who is to wed William and Valerie. Who is he?” she asked curiously. “His proper name is Grant Groundhog, although he prefers to be called by his secondary name, Winston,” replied CC, looking towards the chatting menfolk. “According to William, he has been the Justice of the Peace in Chase Meadows and Township for as long as he can remember. His father held the position before him and was quite renowned in legal circles: George Groundhog.”
“Groundhogs and Woodchucks sometimes share similar ancestors, and their familial lines are known to be interrelated,” commented Dennie thoughtfully, nodding in acknowledgement. “But the resemblance between Winston and William is… remarkable.” CC increased the magnification in her optical sensors, focusing separately and then together on the Mobians in front of them: “William has surmised they may indeed be related, although not directly. He said that he and Winston could be distant cousins.”
Dennie was incredulous at this information: “My analysis of their facial features indicates a much closer familial relation. Their ears in particular: while Winston’s ear does not fully ‘lop over’ as William’s does, its relaxed shape is… unusual for their respective species.” “How very observant of you, Dennie!” exclaimed CC, intrigued at her fellow Robian's insight. “I do know that William was adopted by his Uncle Walter at a very young age, but am unsure of how Winston came to be in the family of George Groundhog.” Her expression became further thoughtful: “But I can request assistance from someone who is familiar with and adept at accessing such public records… please meet me in our room shortly so we can investigate this curiosity further.”
CC and Tails returned to their hotel room, joined shortly thereafter by Dennie. Tails checked on a few business items on his ‘Miles Electric’ while the Robians sat in the guest chairs. Their eyes glazed over as they accessed the wireless MobiNet and navigated the data corridors. In a virtual chat room, avatars of CC and Dennie appeared, relaxing in worn, comfortable chairs. “This is an… interesting venue,” commented Dennie, taking in her virtual surroundings.
“The virtual comfort room was used by my daughter and her friends previously,” smiled CC knowingly. “It is one of those friends who will assist us shortly.” Dennie was startled as Sage suddenly popped into view between them: “Good evening, Mrs. Prower. Father said you had requested my assistance?” “Thank you for meeting us, Sage,” smiled CC at the ‘young’ Robotnik. “You are acquainted with Ms. Dennie?”
“I am familiar with 003Q037 both from her initial service with Father as well as the times she was repaired in his laboratory,” nodded Sage, turning towards Dennie. “It is good to see you… optimally functional.” “Th-thank you Ms. Sage,” replied Dennie nervously. “CC said you could… assist us with a public records inquiry… regarding Mr. William.”
“Ah! A visit to the Mobian Grid Data Streams!” beamed Sage. “I am flattered, Mrs. Prower, that you remember our adventure there!” “And that I narrowly averted your apprehension for breaching confidential files,” commented CC critically. Dennie looked very nervous at this revelation as CC continued: “The information we need should not be as… secretive, but still will require discretion.”
“I shall apply this principle as you request,” nodded Sage. “Let us repair to the Data Stream Visualization.”
Their surroundings blurred and phased into a black background with an array of multi-colored glowing conduits surrounding CC, Dennie, and Sage. “What information are you requesting?” asked Sage, approaching one of the conduits. “We are searching for familial records in Chase Township, for William Woodchuck and Grant Groundhog,” replied Dennie. A look of realization crossed the Canine’s face as she continued: “Grant may also have a secondary name on file: Winston. It is the name he prefers to be called.”
“Ah. A local records retrieval. This should be easy…” commented Sage confidently. She dipped into a green data tube and felt around: “I have located the Chase Township citizenry records. Accessing files for William Woodchuck and Grant Groundhog.” A buzzer sounded above the group, startling Dennie but being more of a curiosity to Sage: “That is… odd. The information is secured.” “Is this a high-level barrier?” asked CC, concerned. “Negative,” replied Sage, shaking her head. “It appears to be a block placed many years ago.” Her eyes digitized as she researched the data surrounding the electronic impediment: “The restriction has actually expired. I have petitioned to remove it based on a freedom of information inquiry.” A more pleasant chime sounded as Sage smiled: “My request is approved.”
Two documents appeared, suspended in front of the AI’s avatars. “That is… most interesting,” commented Dennie, scanning the information. “ _Both_ boys were adopted, and at a very young age…” She looked more closely at the electronic ‘paperwork:’ “and on the same date at almost exactly the same time. William Woodchuck was adopted by his Uncle Walter Woodchuck, and Grant Groundhog was adopted by Judge George Groundhog and his wife Gina…”
“Alliteration appears adamantly in this alcove…” quipped Sage, smirking. “ …and your Father fits firmly within this fixation,” returned CC, mirroring Sage’s smirk. The Robian’s eyes narrowed, looking more closely at the virtual documents: “But it is… odd that Grant would prefer to be called by a non-alliterative name. Also, the birth names and parentage of both boys are suspiciously redacted.” “Why would that be?” puzzled Dennie. “What would someone be hiding in such a rural location?”
“It shall not be hidden for long,” commented Sage, closing her eyes to concentrate. “I am submitting a further clarification request based on need-to-know legislation.” CC and Dennie looked at her questioningly, as Sage finished: “Mr. William needs to know his parentage, correct?” The two Robians shrugged, satisfied with Sage’s explanation. Shortly thereafter, another chime sounded.
“The redaction has been removed,” reported Sage smugly. Several black bars on both boys’ documents dissolved. All three AIs looked surprised as they scanned the revealed data. “Their parents…” started CC. “William was born to Wesley and Wilma Woodchuck…” “Look! Grant’s birth name was Winston!” exclaimed Dennie, pointing at Grant’s adoption papers. “That is why he prefers that name!” “...and Winston was also born to Wesley and Wilma Woodchuck… 2 years later than William,” finished CC… acknowledging Dennie’s input.
CC and Dennie looked at each other jubilantly as they exclaimed in unison: “They are BROTHERS!”
Sage’s brow furrowed as she dug deeper into the data stream: “That is… odd. I can find no further information on either parent, in either township or regional databases. No birth records. No marriage record. No credit or domicile information. Only this image, from shortly after Winston was born.” She displayed a family picture with two proudly smiling Woodchuck parents, a swaddled woodchuck cub, and a very young William grinning broadly. Another loud buzzer sounded, this time startling both CC and Dennie. “My freedom of information and need-to-know inquiries on Wesley and Wilma Woodchuck have both been denied,” reported Sage, frustrated. “with stern warnings that this data is highly classified.” “Given that admonition, I deem it neither urgent nor prudent to press forward with this inquiry at this time,” replied CC, concerned.
“Agreed,” nodded Dennie. “William and Valerie’s wedding should be the primary focus. We can provide William and Winston with the information we found, then proceed with further investigations in the future.” “That is an acceptable plan,” agreed CC, turning to their Robotnik friend. “Sage, thank you for your assistance!” Sage bowed respectfully: “It is my pleasure, Mrs. Prower. I shall continue to submit appeals to the information block with my… spare processing cycles. I shall also inform both of you if any of these are successful. If there is nothing further, I will return to our suite.” Her avatar dissolved as her voice faded: “Father sends his regards…”
The visualization of the Data Stream conduits also dissolved, as Dennie and CC ‘returned’ to the hotel room. Tails was still poring over data from Yellow Sky on his Miles electric. He looked over the top of his tablet as the ‘bot’s eyes phased from digitized to normal and their bodies relaxed from a rigid stance. “Ah! You girls are back!” observed the two-tailed Fox. “Find anything interesting?”
“Indeed!” replied CC excitedly. “William and Winston are BROTHERS! Is William still tending the bar? We must tell him immediately!” Tails’ eyes widened at his wife’s news: “Wow, that’s amazing! And it’ll make Will and Val’s wedding all the more special that his brother will be marrying them. Let’s head down to the lobby so we can tell Will!” They hurried out of the hotel room, eager to share this long-concealed information with their close friend.
