“you can’t keep me safe from everything.” CHINHANDS
Protector/Protectee Starters (accepting)
Sora already knew she couldn’t keep Mimi safe from everything. The digital world was full of danger and they were smack in the middle of it. The virus, as Koushiro had dubbed it, was beginning to spread to humans and Koushiro’s cure was always a half-step behind. Not that it mattered now… the chosen’s campsite was attacked and they’d all been separated.
Sora only had time to grab hold of Mimi’s wrist once she noticed a cave entrance through the brush. The other children scattered and amongst the chaos, Mimi must have twisted her ankle. They sat in the shadows- and hopeful safety- of the cave as Sora tried to ignore the occasional flash, a twitching glow, in Mimi’s eyes.
Sora knew she couldn’t keep Mimi safe from everything, but she could keep her safe from some things, and she’d be damned if she didn’t try.
But Mimi was growing restless and Sora was getting agitated. She was running out of reasons to keep Mimi hidden away.
“Who are we if we don’t try and find our friends, Sora?!”
Sora played the line over and over again in her head. Who were they? They were cowards. No– she– was a coward. Sora looked down at her own feet in disgust as she mentally rattled off the reasons she’d already given to Mimi in a hopeless attempt to convince her to stay.
You’re already hurt, look at your ankle. We don’t even know where to start looking. Our partners aren’t with us- they’re probably with the rest of the group. It’s much safer to sit and wait. Your eyes are twitching with light the same way Patamon’s– nevermind. We both know Koushiro will figure out the cure. I can’t let you go. I can’t let anything happen to you. I can’t let them– I– I love-
Sora grit her teeth and crouched down on the ground so she could rest her elbows on her knees. She pressed her face into her fists so hard she began to see colors in the back of her eyelids. Mimi probably couldn’t see her. The younger girl managed to drag herself towards the other side of the cave in an attempt to show strength, but all Sora saw was stubbornness. It was like she was only trying to distance herself.
Once Mimi got hold of the wall she tried to pull herself up off the ground. She grimaced and felt Sora’s eyes hurriedly looking for her through the shadows.
“I’m fine.” Mimi said reflexively, her hope withering away with every throb of pain she felt in her ankle. It only took a few seconds for Sora to follow her voice and find her, much to Mimi’s dismay.
Instead of helping her up though, Sora sat down on the ground with her. She wondered if she’d have to tell Mimi to stop or if she’d come to the conclusion herself. In a few moments time she seemingly did- Mimi slid back down and sat squarely in front of Sora, her back leaned up against the cavern rock.
“Are you happy now?” Mimi asked with a quick roll of her eyes. Her gaze fell somewhere else.
“No.” Sora replied bluntly.
“Then we should do something. You should do something.”
Sora stared at her, her eyes adjusting to decipher Mimi’s outline against the wall. “That wouldn’t make me happy either.”
“You’re never happy.” Mimi muttered, but then Sora saw it again- a fizz of light that was there and then wasn’t. It jolted behind Mimi’s eyes yet Sora felt it in her gut. She hadn’t before- but this time it lasted slightly longer so Sora knew she wasn’t imagining it. Mimi was infected and it was clearly getting worse.
“Mimi…” Sora began, shifting onto her knees so she could lean in closer.
Mimi furrowed her brows and tilted away. “What?”
Was it possible she didn’t know? Sora outstretched an arm but it drooped away with hesitancy. There was another quick jolt of light but this time Sora was close enough to see the slightest reaction- a fleeting flinch of pain.
“You know.” Sora replied, mute of emotion. “You-”
Mimi cut her off. “Be quiet.”
This time, Mimi twisted her legs under her so she sat on her knees. She thrust an arm outwards and pressed a single finger up against Sora’s lips. “Shush. I know. And if you won’t let me leave, you need to get out of here.”
Sora tried to argue again. “But I-”
Mimi’s hand fell back to her side. “You can’t keep me safe from everything.”
And still, Sora knew it was true. She couldn’t protect Mimi from the virus slowly taking her over, yet still, Sora knew she could protect her from something. She could save her the agony of succumbing alone- lost in some dark, damp, unforgiving cave. Sora took Mimi’s hand and squeezed it in her own. “I can try.”
Just as quickly as Sora picked it up, Mimi pulled her hand away. It’s warmth lingered on Sora’s skin. “Don’t be stupid. You’ll get infected too.”
“Maybe.” Sora mused, “Or maybe I’m already infected. Or maybe I’ll get infected if I find everyone else.”
Mimi gasped. “Don’t talk like that!”
So she didn’t. Instead, they reminisced about the adventures of childhood and their last class together. They talked about Mimi’s move to america and then her move back. They tried to rank the boys from least to most attractive but decided they couldn’t go through with it. Time passed. Time grew shorter. Mimi’s eyes lit up with more frequency. Sora leaned up next to her and took her hand once more. She was cold.
“Hey,” Sora began, “somewhere in there, you said you trust our friends, right?”
“I trust them too.” Sora went on. “I trust that Koushiro will find a cure and that this virus will only be temporary.”
Mimi nodded again– slowly.
Sora caught on. “Are you sure you trust him?”
Mimi toiled on her words for a few moments. “I… yeah I do I mean… he’s never let us down before, right?”
“Right.” Sora squeezed Mimi’s hand harder. “And he won’t now.”
Mimi didn’t say anything. Perhaps she thought that was an awful lot of pressure to put on someone, or perhaps she decided she wasn’t really sure how much she trusted him. Perhaps she was just scared. Sora once felt what it was like to lose herself– to have something else take over– but thankfully Yamato and Jou pulled her out of it. She didn’t know what she would have done if they hadn’t shown her the light. Had the time come from her to switch roles?
After another jolt of light Mimi gripped Sora’s hand more fiercely, like her will was in direct opposition of her words. “You should really go.”
“I’m not going anywhere.”
“I don’t care.” Sora sat up so she could look Mimi in the eyes. “I’m telling you I trust Koushiro. I’m telling you that I know this is scary- this is so scary- but if I really trust that things will be okay, how can it matter? I promise you, infected or not, you’ll come back to us. We’ll get you back. I’ll–” Sora hesitated, “You’ll come back to me.”
Mimi seemed touched but she was too stubborn. She repeated herself, unrelenting in how she pushed away Sora’s care in an effort to protect her friend. “…you’ll get infected.”
Sora bit her lip. She wondered for a moment if this is how Yamato felt, diving into the darkness to save her mere hours after freeing himself from it. He must have trusted that he could make it out, or he must have understood that standing by and doing nothing would be much worse anyways. His crest lured him- how could he lose a friend?- and so Sora’s crest lured her. How could she lose Mimi?
Sora exhaled, squeezing Mimi’s hand one final time before letting it go. Mimi winced like she expected Sora to leave. It was what she’d been pushing for but finally let it be known that Sora leaving was her fear in all of this. Sora felt light- as light as someone could given the circumstances- upon realizing she’d made the right decision. This was Mimi, and if the gamble was infection…
Mimi sat up and blinked. “W-what?”
Sora shifted herself so she was kneeling again. She raised her newly freed hand to Mimi’s cheek and traced her fingers down her jawline, stopping at her chin. Mimi’s eyes looked foreign but there was still enough of her in there that Sora knew she could hear.
“I believe so much in our friends. I believe in you. You’ll find your way back, I’ll find my way back. I believe so much and I can’t leave you alone– I can’t let you do this alone. I don’t care if you infect me.”
“No.” This time it was Sora who raised a finger to Mimi’s lips. “You asked me before who we’d be if we didn’t try and find our friends and I don’t think I’d be much of anyone. I’m not leaving you. Do you trust me?”
Mimi’s eyes welled as she nodded. Sora could feel her hot breathe against her hand. “So maybe you’ll infect me. But I promise, it’ll be okay.”
Sora’s eyes had grown so used to the dark that she could see Mimi relax. She knew she’d gotten through to her, even if Mimi tried to counter her one last time.
Sora leaned down and kissed her before Mimi could get any farther. It was long and deep and slow and Sora only pulled back when she knew she had a few seconds. With her hand still grazing Mimi’s cheek, she reassured her one last time. “It’ll be okay.”
