France, 1950s. The southern province is going through difficult post-war years. At this time, Gabriella dreams of true love, but those around her consider her obsession with such an idea indecent and even crazy. To protect the girl from passion and vice, her parents marry her off. Gabriella's husband turns out to be a decent and loving man, and life with him is a prison sentence. In a sanatorium, where Gabriella is sent for treatment, she falls hopelessly in love with a wounded veteran of the Indochina War, Andre.
