I am packing up all my shit to move across the country for residency and I have a bunch of science textbooks that I don't want to schlep with me, though I have no doubt that at least part of the content is out of date by now-- can I donate them to the library? somewhere else? or are they basically trash at this point?

Generally library donations just get sent to the library book sale -- they usually don't put them into the collection, since that's pretty carefully curated for space and content. So you can, but like, it'd be functionally the same as giving them to a local thrift shop. That'd be my recommendation, honestly -- they might get a second life in the thrift, and if they don't, those shops have better ways of disposing of stuff than we do.

I will say, if you're on Facebook or Craigslist, I'd try looking up your local Freecycle community and just posting an ad seeing if anyone wants them. Then if nobody hits you up in a few days you can donate them with a clear heart. :)

I have a knitting/crocheting question-- I have a hand-knit beanie that I love, and it got stretched out by an ex-partner with a bigger head than mine. Is there any way to make the head opening area smaller again?

oh no! that sucks, my sympathies.

I would first try reblocking it: soak your beanie in hot water. then, when you take it out, gently squeeze the water from it (do NOT wring it!), wrap it in a towel and squeeze that towel to get rid of as much moisture as you can. lay the beanie on a flat surface and gently pad it into the shape you want it to have. it will want to stretch out; do not let it. then blow dry it (if you don't have a hairdryer, air drying also works, but the heat encourages the fibres to stay in the new shape). if it's only a little too big for you, this will probably work.

if that's not enough, you can try putting a little tuck (or several) into the brim, but depending on the shape of your beanie and how you like to wear it, that will be noticeable. or put in a seam all the way to the top, to get rid of a bit of excess fabric.

that's about all the ideas I have for now but maybe someone else has more?

I'd really love to start writing Honor Among Thieves fic, but all of my experience with DnD is from playing homebrew. Do you have a recommendation for a good place to start learning about the lore of Faerûn?

*whispers* I have a confession to make.

All of my experience is playing homebrew.

Everything I learned about Faerûn I learned from the Forgotten Realms wiki. I just started by reading pages on Szass Tam and the Red Wizards and so on, and followed the rabbit hole from there. I studied a downloadable map, too, helpful for place locations!

As a result I highly doubt my knowledge is as good as, say, someone who's read the actual D&D novels set in that world. But it's been enough to get me by!

Luckily, I don't think anyone is expecting you to be an expert. Those of us who do play D&D who are in the fandom by and large seem to be understanding that there are a lot of total newbies who don't know anything beyond loving the movie, and I don't think anyone will be upset if you don't throw in a ton of lore. In fact I've had a ton of comments on Untranslatable Shadows complimenting me on my dungeon design, unaware even with my fic tags that I'm modifying the infamous Tomb of Horrors dungeon.

Feel free to just start looking stuff up on the wiki and see what you get. Do a little exploring, go down a rabbit hole or two. You can also come up with a story and then do some research to see what will compliment it. You can even just keep the setting of your story in Neverwinter and the local surrounding area.

So that's what I'd recommend - dive into the wiki and see what you find.
