theres a theory going around that Nolan axed Nafsika and gave her story to Calypso, and i'm sitting here in dread bc too many pieces click into place with this, and the million dollar question to answer" would nolan do this?" is the answer to "does he get how pivotal Nafsika is to the story and how beloved she is by Greeks?" the answer to both is no & also now i wonder about Wilsons translation about her. So Nolan will "soften" the villain Calypso to be more "misunderstood" and Odysseus will lose his memory, so will she partly take Nafsika's place? Will they have a relationship, erasing the abuse he suffers at her hands? Then he bangs his head idk, regains his memory and oops he's married, Calypso is heartbroken, and wont help him go home and hes stuck? And how he goes home without Nafsikaa bc therws no godess to help him? Bc gods dont exist bc realism? But Zendaya Athena is a thing? How it all fits?? Well, If some gods exist as nebulous beings but others like Athena are not a godess but she is a mortal? An important human, a queen maybe? Of a neighboring island? That passes with her ship and she sees him and offers to help him and gets him back to Ithaca and is part of the action? Ok i'm legit scared but lets pretend all is fine and focus on other stuff until the bomb explodes in July. What do you think??!!
I am a little confused. How could possibly the roles of Calypso and Nafsika be merged? And how could Theron support Nafsika’s role? Nafsika was a young maiden living with her parents. Nolan has gone batshit crazy but that would take the cake!
Also there was never any relationship between Odysseus and Nafsika. She wanted him for a husband (as typically very young women would marry much older men back then) but Odysseus was basically “Thanks, but I am an old man and honestly I just want to go back to my wife”. And Nafsika had the decency and sanity Calypso lacked and was like “Oh, dammit, but anyway good luck king peace out”.
There is nothing in common between Nafsika and Calypso for them to be merged into one role. My assumption is that Nafsika will simply be entirely written out of the script, which is a real shame and irony, because if they wanted strong empowered women, then Nafsika’s mother Queen ARETE is CANONICALLY one of the strongest mortal woman of the Homeric Epics and CANONICALLY more powerful and/ or influential than her husband king Alcinous.
Whether Calypso becomes a victim is another story and entirely possible. His messed up memory in the trailer and Theron’s seeming concern are suspicious. Maybe we don’t see the whole story though and Odysseus is drugged up by Calypso herself and she is checking his reaction to the restoration of his memory with fake care. We can’t assume that from the trailer just yet.
I agree that we need to step out of it a bit. Maybe some people are overreacting, maybe it’s indeed shit, but the world’s not gonna fall on our heads either way. I am concerned that with this much talk we’re giving it way more visibility than it deserves.
One of the many things Nolan never considered/took seriously & no one dared to correct him apparently, is that he's releasing a film about Greece and the Mediterranean, in the middle of summer, to be watched by people who will go to see a movie set in th mediterranean including Mediterraneans, with the film in large or in whole looking like its shot in northern europe. Did it really not occur to him people might want to see the Mediterranean sea & countries? That if people see a grim Manchester-washed (love the term btw good one!) mess they might not like it, and even tourists might take it to social media to post ,"um Nolan This is how Greece/Ithaca/Italy/Mediterrranean looks like, i'm on vacation there right now"
This is already happening. I made a couple posts like this too. Once the movie is released, there will be more of those posts, unless our expectations as a whole are subverted for the better.
I had this theory that maybe the ugly, dark shots are during the scenes were Odysseus suffers in the storms and all the dangers he goes through and at times of more calmness we are going to see better landscapes and colours, however if that's the case, it is weird that there is not any such scene in any of the trailers so far. Why would you only show grey, gloomy scenes in your "advertisement" if your movie also has turqoise or deep blue, pristine waters and sunny locations? If the background is not as important to Nolan I really don't understand why he filmed in five different countries...

about that comment on real place for Ithaca, his island home (vs home island) are we sure that this is not actually "correct" in the film -_- . like i've been having doubts the story will take place im ithaca & mediterranean, based on all the talk about "global story, global cast, many locations etc" that actual ithaca & greece are going to be completely sidelined & "ithaca" will be located somewhere else. It was you i think? who suggested sth like this might happen? He will transform the story into a global one not a greek one, which will take place acrosss the world? So if this "island home" aka the medieval castle IS "Ithaca" and his homeland (island, mountain town, whatever) is located around it , but its not actual ithaca & greece, its elsewhere. So, a real place for a fantastical Ithaca, bc no Ithaca & greece exist in real life or the myth apparently. Also. What kind of "greek boats " did you see Holland. A bunch of viking longships? have you read the GQ interview Inside the making of the Odyssey with Nolan Damon Holland & Pattinson? Theres so much BS there but i must say, the part where Nolan explains part of his approach to the Odyssey, where he recalls his astonishment that as he claims the Odyssey had lots off payoffs but no setups earlier for them to pay off, (foreshadowing etc) and he patiently explains how it is a problem that its structure does not look close enough to modern day movies for him, and how he set out to "fix that" , sure takes the cake for me. Like we knew he was arrogant but that is on another level. Also since he has an obsession with warping time/space i wonder if these "setups" are going to be the Troy parts, scattered throughout the movie as flashbacks or sth. "Existential crisis" he mentions while tied to to the mast, bc yeah sure why not. Is he gonna regret stuff he did before or sth. Oh look at sillly me. Still trying to make sense of the clusterfuck he's made. I'm just trying to brace myself i guess & have my brain not hurt as much.

So, the article, a promo interview for the Odyssey, starts with Nolan visiting the Castle of Saint Caterina in a small island in Italy and thinking the 15th century Christian fortress would be the ideal location to use as the Mycenaean Greek palace of Odysseus in Ithaca. Okay. That is, even though Nolan did go to Messenia in Greece and could have visited the archaeological site of the Palace of Nestor or Mycenae as well. We're off to a very promising start.

I don't know how to tell you this Nolan but you really did not have to go to Iceland and Scotland in order to shoot a story unfolding in Greece and the rest of the Mediterranean. You exhausted your cast and crew solely due to your stupidity.

At this point I think he is lowkey throwing the ball.
Only Pattinson asking to read the script and Nolan being startled at that just shows that nobody knew shit or cared about the Odyssey, it was a blind yes for working with Nolan with what sounds like a classic famous story (which however they hardly know about).
Is Nolan serious about the absence of the set-ups? Did he skip the moment where Odysseus commits hubris against Poseidon during his fight with Polyphemus? If that's not a set-up what is? Also, sorry but I asked in google what are the first texts ever using the technique of foreshadowing:
I think it's fair to say at this point; Nolan does not understand Odyssey. I don't know if he ends up lucky and gets praise again for a mess of a movie (like Inception) or a movie that ended up good thanks to another person (like The Dark Knight due to Heath Ledger), but he does not understand Odyssey.

This extremely long, exhausting piece finally comes to its end. I will say that I am surprised by how miserable it all sounds. It seems like the actors simply hate their lives and jobs, at least the way movies are being made now, but are equally desperate to keep working because they have to. They did not say one. single. thing about Greece and Odyssey, and Homer, except for Nolan's inaccurate comment about a lack of foreshadowing. That's literally all they say about the Odyssey. Instead, they talk about other movie projects, how they want to pursue their personal lives but they all sleep at 7pm quietly in their hotel room at this point, how they hardly like being on camera, that Nolan is a good director though, that movies are becoming shitty (no shit Sherlock). That's it. That's what I got from an interview about the supposedly big cinematic event of the year. Pure depression.
Honestly I too like to keep some hopes but I don't see how this thing can turn up any good. And with all the crap they all keep saying, I am not wasting money on this. Brace yourself, Anon, it's probably not going to be good. But honestly maybe it would be for the better if it's not received well, otherwise such shitty and demeaning behaviour towards the classics and Greece's heritage might continue.

Δεν θυμάμαι εάν είχες ασχοληθεί στο παρελθόν με αυτό το θέμα αλλά το γεγονός ότι ξένοι συγγραφείς πλουτίζουν με το να γράφουν retellings της ελληνικής μυθολογίας χωρίς κανένα σεβασμό στο original με εκνευρίζει αφάνταστα. Για παράδειγμα έβλεπα με την παρέα μου το Percy Jackson και συζητούσαμε ότι για να βάζεις όλες τις μυθικές τοποθεσίες να βρίσκονται στην Αμερική σημαίνει ότι δεν αφιέρωσες πέντε λεπτά να μάθεις ότι ο Όλυμπος είναι βουνό στην Ελλάδα. Άλλο παράδειγμα είναι η Madeline Miller . Προφανώς δεν έχω σκοπό να κάνω οποιαδήποτε ομοφοβική επίθεση αλλά θεωρώ ότι το όλο story με τον Αχιλλέα και τον Πάτροκλο που ήταν ζευγάρι απλά δεν βγάζει νόημα. Ο Αχιλλέας ( τουλάχιστον όπως θυμάμαι) κυριολεκτικά κρατούσε μούτρα γιατί δεν πήρε την σκλάβα που ήθελε, και είναι πρότυπο ώριμου ανθρώπου που θα έκανε τα πάντα για την αληθινή αγάπη? Ένα άλλο παράδειγμα είναι το άλλο βιβλίο της η Κίρκη το οποίο στον πρόλογο αναφέρει ότι η Κίρκη ήταν η μόνη γυναίκα που den παρουσιάζεται ως θύμα ή σκύλα. Δηλαδή η Πηνελόπη δεν επαινείτε από τον Όμηρο και η Ελένη από τον Σοφοκλή για την ευστροφία τους ?

Το χειρότερο με το Percy Jackson είναι ότι οι θεοί του Ολύμπου μετακόμισαν στην Νέα Υόρκη επειδή υποτίθεται ότι οι Έλληνες ξέπεσαν σα λαός και σαν πολιτισμός και το κέντρο της ανθρωπότητας έγινε η Αμερική. Δηλαδή κυριολεκτικά "παίρνουμε τους θεούς σας και εσάς σας ρίχνουμε μια ροχάλα". Είναι αδιανόητα ταπεινωτικό και ανήθικο, ο ορισμός του σφετερισμού. Δεν το διάβασα ούτε είδα τις ταινίες ποτέ, όχι μόνο για αυτό το λόγο αλλά κι επειδή μου φάνηκε φοβερά ηλίθια και η πλοκή. Ξέρω ότι ίσως κάποιοι εδώ διαβάζετε ξένα retelling και να σας αρέσουν αλλά η γνώμη μου είναι ότι το 99% είναι φοβερά χαμηλού επιπέδου, κάτι που δεν είναι παράξενο αν λάβει κανείς υπόψη την άγνοια, τις σφετεριστικές διαθέσεις, τις παράλογες αξιώσεις και την πλήρη έλλειψη διαπολιτισμικής ευαισθησίας που χαρακτηρίζει συχνά αυτούς τους συγγραφείς.
Λίγοι θυμούνται και σχεδόν κανένας δεν αναφέρει ότι στην Ιλιάδα ο Αχιλλέας εξομολογείται στον Αγαμέμνονα ότι είχε δει την Βρισηίδα πιο σοβαρά από ό,τι ως μια απλή παλλακίδα. Επίσης, ο Πάτροκλος σε κάποια φάση μιλάει κατ' ιδίαν στην Βρισηίδα και της υπόσχεται να πει στον Αχιλλέα να την πάρει μαζί του στην Ελλάδα και να την παντρευτεί. Εν ολίγοις πιο πολύ για κουμπάρος έκανε ο Πάτροκλος λολ Φυσικά είναι αλήθεια ότι στην κλασική περίοδο η σχέση των δύο επανερμηνεύτηκε ως ερωτική, αλλά στον Όμηρο δε φαίνεται κάτι τέτοιο. Ήταν πολύ δεμένοι και ο Αχιλλέας τον πένθησε πολύ, όπως ίσως θα έπρεπε να πενθεί κάποιος κάποιον αδελφικό κολλητό πριν την εποχή των λυκοφιλιών και των ατονισμένων συναισθημάτων (την σημερινή δηλαδή), που κάνει την παραμικρή ένταση να ερμηνεύεται ως έρωτας. Το γεγονός ότι όμως επανερμηνεύτηκε η σχέση τους επί της κλασικής περιόδου νομίζω κανονικοποιεί σε κάποιο βαθμό και αυτήν την ερμηνεία ως εναλλακτική και μπορεί κάποιος να προτιμά μια τέτοια ερμηνεία, αν το θέλει. Αυτό που δεν είναι σωστό είναι να αρνείσαι την ομηρική διήγηση και να λες αυτόματα ομοφοβικό κάποιον που επιλέγει την πρωτότυπη εκδοχή. Κάποιοι μπορεί να είναι όντως ομοφοβικοί αλλά πολλοί μπορεί απλώς να θέλουν να μείνουν πιστοί στην αρχική διήγηση ή να την προτιμούν ως ιστορία φιλίας παρά έρωτα, δε μπορεί να τους πάρει κι αυτούς η μπάλα! Το τρελό που με είχε ενοχλήσει εμένα είναι ότι η Emily Wilson που έκανε την (χάλια) μετάφραση που ακολουθεί τώρα και ο Νόλαν έγραψε ολόκληρο πρόλογο στην μετάφραση της για να απολογηθεί στους αναγνώστες που δε μπορούσε να γράψει τον Αχιλλέα και τον Πάτροκλο ως γκέι ζευγάρι γιατί κάτι τέτοιο δε φαίνεται μέσα στην Ιλιάδα! Φαντάσου έναν μεταφραστή να ζητάει συγγνώμη από τους αναγνώστες γιατί δεν επιτρέπεται να παραποιήσει το πρωτότυπο κείμενο και να παρατείνει αυτήν την παρανόηση που έχει κυριαρχήσει! Μιλάμε αν στην Αμερική πρέπει να απολογηθείς και για την ΜΗ παραποίηση κειμένου, έχουν κάψει φλάντζα οι άνθρωποι, τι να λέμε τώρα...

The throne was found inside her burial place in Vergina, discovered by archaeologist Manolis Andronikos in 1987. Εγώ πάντως θα σταθώ στο ότι η ελληνική τηλεόραση έπαιζε αυτό το σκουπίδι και απ' ό,τι λες το έπαιξε και αρκετές φορές! Ειλικρινά δεν αντέχω άλλο το οτιδήποτε είναι αυτό που συμβαίνει σε μας. Τα σύνδρομα και τα συμπλέγματα που έχουν οι Έλληνες.
Στο βίντεο που κοινοποίησα τις προάλλες με το ελληνικό καστ, το οποίο παίρνει πολύ θετικά σχόλια κατά 99%, μπαίνουν τώρα στο youtube κάποιοι Έλληνες που κάθονται και γράφουν στα αγγλικά ότι οι δικοί μας ηθοποιοί είναι τραγικοί και απείρως χειρότεροι από το καστ του Νόλαν (ο Τράβις Σκοτ πχ ο ράπερ που δεν έχει ξαναπαίξει σε ταινία και τώρα θα κάνει αρχαίο έλληνα ραψωδό είναι πιο κατάλληλος από τον Νούσια ή τον Χειλάκη ας πούμε). Ένα σημαντικό μέρος του ελληνικού λαού έχει θέμα. Μεγάλο θέμα.
Συνεχίζω να ελπίζω πάντως ότι ο Νόλαν δε θα το πάει τόσο στα άκρα, όχι επειδή δίνει δεκάρα για την Ελλάδα, αλλά επειδή μάλλον θα γνωρίζει ότι και αρκετοί Αμερικανοί γνώστες θα αντιδράσουν έντονα άμα ξεφύγει τόσο πολύ. Και δραματουργικά να το δεις, δεν έχει νόημα να φάει τόσο χρόνο στην (μη) ιστορία της Ελένης άλλωστε. Οδύσσεια υποτίθεται πρέπει να δούμε.
Οι unboxholics ανέβασαν μια δημοσίευση που γράφει ότι υπάρχει δραματική μείωση στο ενδιαφέρον για την Οδύσσεια. Δεν ξέρω όμως αν εννοούν διεθνώς ή μόνο εδώ. Εγώ θεωρώ ότι και παρά όλα αυτά πάλι θα είναι εισπρακτική επιτυχία αλλά οι unboxholics έχουν έγκυρες πληροφορίες συνήθως.
