Time to stop devaluing matinee audiences
Now I'm not quite a grey/silver head JUST yet and I rarely get a bargain ticket, but I am an avid matinee theatre-goer. So why do they always put on the standby/alternate for the afternoon show?? I'm not saying the standby is inferior - far from it, in fact in my experience you often get a more dedicated performance. I've just seen The Bodyguard at the Edinburgh Playhouse and I knew at the time I booked that I would be seeing Zoe Birkett - in fact I booked it that way purposely (no offence Alexandra) - but why does Zoe have to be relegated to matinees only?? Couldn't they alternate (no pun intended)? Why couldn't Alexandra Burke do the Saturday matinee and Zoe do the evening? Where is the problem? Hard-nosed Agents pushing for what's perceived as 'top billing' spots? The artiste's themselves? The point is for me as an audience member it feels a bit like they don't care about the matinee audiences. So Mr Producer, if it's down to you, let us matinee-goers no longer be seen as second best!
