plot: “of all the wrong numbers in the world, the nude i meant to send to my significant other wound up on YOUR phone”
Ryan had just sat down as he heard his phone notification going off in his bedroom, where he had left it. He groaned, standing back up to check on it, praying it was not anything he actually had to deal with. As he saw the strange number flash up, he opened the text with a frown. The picture opened and his face turned into a mixture of shock and a smirk. That was not what he was expecting, and he was certainly not complaining. He debated just putting his phone down and ignoring it, but he couldn’t seem to stop looking, and it felt rude to just ignore.
[text] I think sending nudes to strangers could end very badly for you
[text] but you made my day 😉

there was something about the carnival that made ryan feel like a kid again. it reminded her of simpler times. times of when she didn’t have to think much beyond what she was going to wear to school or what university she wanted to apply to. times of when her family was whole and there wasn’t a missing piece of her heart. that seemed the normal thing for her now. every thing she did always lead her thoughts back to the one person she just couldn’t let go of: her brother, reagan. she liked to think that he was her best friend and while everyone around her was moving on with her life, ryan couldn’t let go after reggie went missing.
she was trying to enjoy herself. but all she could think about were the times growing up that they had come to the same carnival. the school had been putting it on for years and she had lost count. but every ride she went on, ryan’s heart was heavy. she was never the same after he went missing, she was more guarded. and the worst part was she saw his face everywhere. in the beginning she would run up to them, grab at their arm or shoulder just to see, but it never was and eventually, she learned to live with it. only today felt different when she saw his face. she thought she was really seeing reggie.
ry felt like she had become a drag on her group and decided to call it a night and bid her friends goodbye. they had put up with her for long enough and she just wasn’t in the mood anymore. but as she started walking to the exit, she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. ryan rubbed her eyes and blinked a couple times but when she opened them again, she saw him. ten feet in front of her, the face that haunted her for so long. only this time, it didn’t seem like an illusion. “reagan?” she choked out, barely able to hear her own voice.
“puta merda,” ryan said, as she started to push through the crowd, not caring about anyone except her brother. somewhere along the way she had dropped some of the things she was holding; the remains of her brisket dinner, a toy she had won earlier in the day. nothing else mattered. “you’re here? you’re really here?” she pleaded, reaching up to hold onto either side of his face. her eyes had welled with tears and she was fighting so hard not to let them fall. “por favor me diga que não estou sonhando.”

"my horoscope said that i shouldn't assume responsibility for anyone but myself today," ryan started, flipping her hair over her shoulder. "so i'm afraid if you eat that all to yourself, i will not be there to help you when you get sick." she was joking, of course, but she felt it still needed to be said. "now if you decided to share..."

Ryan sighed softly, his gaze downcast. “We aren’t the same people we used to be.” When they got married, he had expected them to last forever. But time seemed to continuously put distance between them. “Maybe we should get a divorce.” The words stung as he spoke them, but the two of them had been arguing so much, the love was soon turning to hate.

"i just.. i don't know. i want to go on a date but i hate the idea of dating apps, you know?" ryan said, as she picked up a necklace to inspect it better. "i want to meet someone...organically. like accidently spill coffee on me or something and offer to pay my dry cleaning. or hit on me at a bar and we spend the whole night talking." maybe it was just her old school way of thinking but she was on her phone and computer enough for work. she didn't want to start a connection through a texting.
