Was he losing his mind? No, they were standing there; there was no need to pinch them to confirm that. Did he have an explanation for what was happening? Absolutely not.

"Wha—No, I'm okay, please come in."

Once the initial shock was... Well, not gone but under control enough for him to say anything, Eric stepped aside and let them in. How was it even possible that they knocked on his door again, that they were standing there looking absolutely fine and oblivious to what he had gone through? As if they didn't know he had been ear-deep in nostalgia since that horrible day, going through the memories they had made together and coming to terms that there wouldn't be any new ones. As if they didn't know they had died.

Clearly, he was wrong in thinking they would've called him if they weren't busy, unless they had cloned themselves or practiced bilocation. At least they didn't pretend they hadn't noticed Eric, so when their eyes met, he gave them a confused but friendly look, smiling just enough to show that everything was fine on his side and he wasn't sulking.

"Running an errand this late? Tell me you just ran out of snacks and wine, and you're not becoming a workaholic."

"Emergency. Emergency situation, sorry...!" He didn't cut in front of people like that, knowing exactly how annoying it was when others did that. This time, however, he simply had to. It could be a regular store with an equally regular checkout line to everyone else, but right now, in Eric's head, it was taken straight out of an action-packed blockbuster. Everything about this seemingly ordinary task was urgent. "I'm sorry, it's an emergency."

Eric jumped at the loud sound, even though he should have been prepared for it. Light traveled faster than sound, a lightning flash always preceded thunder – a heads-up he should appreciate, but, somehow, always succumbed to his fears. "I fucking hate those," he muttered through his teeth, eyes shut as he waited for his heart to stop pounding in his chest. It would all be back in a minute anyway. "It's the electric current and that cracking sound... I hate it. If only I could mute it."

"I can't believe my wife went to that restaurant for dinner with a different man, where everyone can see them! Take pictures, gossip about it!" Shaking his head in disbelief, Eric couldn't tell whether he was hurt by the revelation or just angry. He wanted to be angry, worry about his career, or even how this would influence how people perceived his parents' relationship. They had been dealing with ridiculous articles and innuendos ever since they got together, and they remained the happiest couple the brothers knew. What a toxic environment it was... "That's just... So risky," he muttered.
