i never quite fell in love with the look and feel of that little white-and-yellow sticker on the back of my cell phone -- and indeed, i peeled it off when i realized that i hadn't used the tag in several months! -- but i was sad to hear that would-be visa- and mastercard-competitor, the rfid-chip-based payments company, blingnation, had gone under (ahem, "paused its operations"). perhaps it was early-adopter pride; perhaps a bit of emotional investment in a company that almost paid part of my rent; perhaps just sympathy for an underdog that underestimated how many merchants would sign up to test non-dominant technology on a technology-saturated public.
the news is particularly interesting in light of google's announcement, a few weeks ago, of google wallet, which uses in-built nfc chips in smartphones (although it should be noted that the only major-carrier phone which currently features the technology is the google-sponsored nexus s) to enable quicker, easier, paper- and plastic-less payments. the competition's heating up...
