"Start-Up City: Miami" Book List
Yesterday I attended the Start-Up City: Miami conference at the New World Center, presented by The Atlantic. Over 1,100 people attended throughout the day, representing some really fantastic companies and organizations (and I got to meet Richard Florida, which was awesome!) The Herald has a recap.
A few books were mentioned repeatedly, here they are:
Delivering Happiness: A Path To Profits, Passion, and Purpose by Tony Hsieh. He spoke and was interviewed at the event, and for a guy who wrote a book with the title "Delivering Happiness", I don't think he smiled once the entire time! He was incredibly inspiring though, and the community-oriented projects he/Zappos have going on in downtown Las Vegas can/should/would/need to happen in Miami, and everywhere else. Now if only I had 350M to kick around.
Great by Choice: Uncertainty, Chaos, and Luck--Why Some Thrive Despite Them All by Jim Collins. I've read Jim's other renowned book Good To Great and can't wait to tackle this one. Essential reading for anyone curious about why some businesses/businesspeople succeed and others fail.
Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier by Edward Glaeser. This one seemed more for city planner/big business types, but it seems interesting regardless (my "To Read" list is already way too long).
Bonus: Miami Transformed: Rebuilding America One Neighborhood, One City at a Time by former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. Diaz spoke at the event and I've been curious to read this one.
