Playing IG-88 in Outer Rim. I stuck with bounty hunting; it’s more lucrative than smuggling, albeit more random since tracking down targets is a pain. I was surprised, I was able to pull out a huge cone-from-behind win when I had a big 7 point surge and the one player who quickly got to 8 fame stalled out for quite a while. The race for the last bounty to put us over the top went down to the very last turn and some gunfights on Cantonica. This has been honestly a real surprise in how much fun it is. It really needs 3-4 players (3 is probably best) and it has to move at a decent clip (2 hours tops), so you can’t take it too seriously. Jyn Erso does some quality sabotaging work on Naboo in Star Wars: Outer Rim. I left a longer comment with my rating on BGG, but this game is a tangled mess of contradictions, as FFG’s better efforts are. There are interesting and fun elements! There are bits of it that are teetering on the edge of disaster. And then there are elements that really are garbage. The presentation - layouts, icons, fonts, colors - is absolute trash, so completely incompetent that nobody who worked on it should ever be allowed to work in the industry again. I am being deadly serious here. But of course nobody will be fired, sadly. And yet, and yet. It does a lot with a pretty economical set of rules - I can teach it in 10 minutes or so, unusual for this type of FFG game. It taps into some under-used and under-appreciated bits of the Star Wars universe which I’m a fan of, including (notably) Solo, but also Clone Wars, Rebels, and a bit of Rogue One and even J J Abrams Star Wars (although a lot of fun bits of Solo seem to be being gratuitously withheld for expansion purposes). It inevitably tries to do too much - if it had focused just on Solo, doing heists and smuggling, it would have been better. All the bounty-hunting stuff feels bolted on and just dilutes the game. Do people really want to play IG-88? The pacing is inevitably slow and the narrative elements too diffuse. But you know, it’s still got fun in it. If you like this corner of the Star Wars universe, it’s worth playing.
