The thing I can’t stop thinking about in Kingdom Hearts III is that like. We have at least two pretty clear elements, right?

1) Sora is observing and learning what love “looks like” in each world- Hercules and Meg (romantic), Flynn and Rapunzel (romantic), Woody and Buzz and their love for their friends (platonic), Big Hero Six (platonic), Pirates of the Caribbean (romantic), Frozen (platonic), Monsters Inc (platonic).

2) the build up to Sora’s breakdown in the graveyard with emphasis on him being mocked for being weak by enemies (and lowkey even his friends). He grows more and more insecure and frustrated throughout the game.

And all I can think about is how these specific two themes are at odds in how they culminate in Sora’s sacrifice for Kairi.

Sora spends a majority of the game learning that, often, love means sacrifice. It means caring so much about someone, that you’re willing to put their life above your own- Most of the relationships he witnesses throughout each world involve sacrifice: Flynn cutting Rapunzels hair even though he can’t be healed, Meg pushing Hercules out of the way and getting crushed, will sacrificing himself for his dads freedom, Anna sacrificing her chance to save herself to save her sister, etc.

He is shown repeatedly that love is valuing someone more than yourself- prioritizing their safety over yours.

However, this is only true if you value yourself at all in the first place.

With Sora’s lack of self worth growing more evident to the point of him actually saying “without them, I’m worthless”, the plot actively devalues Sora’s sacrifice for Kairi. In fact, it goes out of its way to show that Sora would hurt himself for any of his friends when he actively risks himself to save their hearts after he ends up in the Final World.

Why would the story go out of its way to do this? Did Sora sacrifice himself because he loves Kairi so much more than everyone else? Or is it that he values everyone else, including Kairi, above himself? Did he feel compelled to believe that was the right thing to do *because* he has seen the script play out multiple times in the game and he thought this was his part to play?

I don’t really know, but it’s definitely food for thought.

At first I was going to have Sora and Riku just be a straight gender bender but then decided it's be neat to have them be trans in this one.

Random Sorikai thoughts about why I’m not really into the ship- but first, I love you polyshippers, I love you I love you I love you sorikai shippers, your ship matters, please keep loving your ship and making art, don’t take this seriously. It’s just a bit of fiction and fun and headcanons.

So I’m just not really into sorikai bc I think it’s funnier if Riku and Kairi low-key hate each other.

SoRiKai parents headcanons

I don't always go in for the "babies ever after" trope, but I do think that the Destiny Trio specifically feel like characters who would want to have kids.

Kairi and Sora would be very open and enthusiastic about wanting kids right from the beginning. Once these three goobers get their feelings for each other sorted out, they're like "so we're definitely having kids someday, right?"

Riku might actually want kids the most of the three, but he's also dealing with crippling fear that he would be a bad dad. (Sora and Kairi say "don't be ridiculous, you'll be a great dad!")

Riku and Sora both cried the first time they held their firstborn. They'd playfully argued throughout Kairi's whole pregnancy about which one of them was the biological father, but the moment that baby arrived it Did Not Matter in the slightest.

They end up having three kids, and Kairi always jokes that they stopped at three kids because "one more and we're outnumbered!" I think it should be two girls and a boy, just to buck the trio tradition of the games.

Also, the Destiny Trio's kids would have so much potential to be hilarious in canonverse. Just the weirdest kids to the weirdest parents. (Happy, healthy, and well-adjusted. Just incurably weird.)

Those kids are NOT keeping other worlds a secret. And none of the trio would like leaving the kids behind unless they absolutely have to. Kairi in particular hates it, she's got too much baggage related to being left behind. The kids are definitely being brought along on any quick jaunt to a safe world.

This results in stuff like them loudly proclaiming to their class "of course Santa is real, I've been to his house!"

Occasionally they leave the kids in the Hundred Acre Wood for some safe babysitting when all three of them are needed to do keyblade master stuff. 'Cause Merlin's house isn't remotely childproofed, but leaving the kids in the care of Rabbit and Kanga and Owl, while knowing that the book is very safe in Merlin's house, would give their parents some peace of mind.

Riku is the biggest soft touch with his kids, and they know it. If you want a parent to say yes, you always ask papa first. (Because they are little mini sokais, and Riku has never been able to deny sokai anything. Even the one that's visibly biologically his, with the silver hair, is a mini sokai and Riku is weak.)
