art question for anyone who can help!!!
does anyone know what this particular effect is they do in old traditionally-drawn cartoons/anime for glowing lights, lasers, fire, etc? like what material or lighting are they using in the studio? i'm seeing them do it in xmen tas but they also used it for superman's heat vision and various other effects in stas as well.
i'm really hesitant to say it's digital because it shows up too much for how prohibitively expensive computer graphics were at the time these shows were being made.
it always looks like it's actually casting a glow onto the rest of the cels so i'm wondering if it's something that fluoresces under whatever lighting they use to scan/photograph the animation frames. the glow seems too uniform and consistent to be manually airbrushed, especially with the way it interacts with the colors beneath it!
what is this effect?????
