The current propaganda I saw for "hurrdurr state order is good" is kind of irritating. First I watched an episode of "explained" on Netflix about pirates. Now, in German we have the terms Pirate and "freibeuter" which translates to buccaneer or privateer. They started the episode with talking about frigging EICHMANN who apparently was tried for pirating and explained that pirating is a term for crimes against humanity. Then they talked about the English privateers for the English Queen but always used the term pirate. They talked about how pirates sold slaves and were appalled at how China treated their biggest pirate as a nation and then went to modern pirates and how they only happen when a state isn't able to keep state order. It was very.... nations need to be strong and keep order or else pirates appear and do crimes against humanity.
The second thing I watched on TV was a documentary about conmen. It started with the guy using a ponzi scheme to swindle people out of their live savings who ended with the Lehman brothers thing. Then they talked about Oskar Schindler. It was very ... Schindler was a conman, lying all the time, but in face of the greater nazi evil he developed a conscience. In Israel, where he wanted to be buried, he is seen as a hero, but in Germany nobody cares for him. I had a feeling the underlying message, though the did not say this, was A "all con men are bad" and B "Jews like that con man cause he saved them", imho putting much emphasis on him being a con man and less on how evil the state was. It was very "we let you judge Schindler and are neutral about him" which seems a bad take tbh. One could talk about how Schindler was profiting off Jewish slave work but tbh, that's for the Jewish people to judge. But judging him because he was a con man is imho a bad take.
