Q31: The Fams by ~Ask-NewHampshire
Every time I draw Oklahoma's modern-day hair, it gets shorter! But that's okay because she's a tomboy.
That flower in her hair is a Cherokee Rose because I happen to really love that legend!
State-tans Project
So once upon a time like two years ago, I had half a nation worth of state-tan OCs, but ditched the project due to being unhappy with it and lack of time.
Buuuut I decided to restart that project! Except I want to do a much better job this time both art-wise and portrayal-wise, so even if you're not interested in the concept of state-tans for Hetalia, would you stop by and leave me a little snippet of information about the state you live in? Anything works: what your state is known for, a bit of history, customs, traditions, anything.
Thanks!
Kels: Yeah, Oregon is called "The Beaver State" Kate: Well clearly she's gotta be a girl.
Me and my roommate as I design state-tans.
I think state-tans have a lot of potential, they just tend to be handled by younger fans who think it's easier to do their homestate without considering much more than what they can think of off the top of their head, resulting in a lot of mary-sues and self-inserts. I've seen a lot of really great ones...! Just...the vast majority tend to be made by younger fans who don't...quite...get it.
I had a bunch of state-tans at one point but I'm really ashamed of most of them except a few.
So um...yeah! Oklahoma state-tan, because I've seen a lot of really terrible ones that I actually found offensive, most of which were created by non-Oklahomans who see the state as a bunch of hicks or don't really understand all the Native American stuff that went on there. It breaks my heart to see my state of origin portrayed like that. It really is a beautiful state with a beautiful history and Native American culture mixed in, but no one takes the time to see it as that.
Unpopular opinion time.
I really hate when the states are portrayed as America's children in Hetalia.
Actually, it really bugs me when they're given the last name Jones in general.
I feel like they're more their own people who happen to take orders from America than the 'children' of America. Like...the 13 colonies? They were kind of like mini-countries way back in the day. There were even border disputes between them and stuff. I doubt they all identified themselves as a "Jones". They're more like co-workers in my mind (with America as the 'boss').
I even headcanon that Virginia and America grew up as playmates, since Virginia was the first colony and all. So Virginia being America's kid...just..what.
I dunno, I can't really explain it. It just bugs me.
MIRA GET YOUR ASS ONLINE I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT NEW HAMSPHIRE
I highly doubt she would be playing volleyball on the beach in Hawaii on New York's team BUT I GOTTA CHECK.
