Wanted to write some of my Station 16 boys and well it was damn cold today so I figured I'd do something with that. This was written on my phone so excuse the grammar or typos. Its monster!au so have fun with that. Plus I'm still sick so I'm amazed I got this much tbh
Also I'm on mobile so no read mores because we die like warriors
When Brice saw that the door to the Captain's office was shut, he knew something was amiss. Captain Maes kept his door open no matter what was going on in the station. He continued past, not wanting to pry knowing that eventually the Captain would come out...or someone would go in. It wasn't long before Hawkins and Bellingham came strolling in, Hawkins peeling off his gloves,
"This chill ain't bothering you at all Bellingham? Damn must be nice to have a pilot light keeping you warm all the time." Gloves and jackets were tossed into the locker as the youngest of their crew quickly changed into his uniform. Bob shrugged as he changed, peering around to catch a glimpse of Brice slipping on his jacket.
"Nah. It doesn't bother me a terrible amount." While it didnt bother him, Bob knew the temperature was colder than normal around this time. Everyone had been griping about it, people weren't used to 30 degree weather around here. Bob wasn't either but it did help that he ran hotter than the others. Useful in situations like this.
"Hey Brice have you seen the Cap this morning?" Flynn buttoned up his shirt and glanced out the dorm door, "His door is still shut."
"It was shut when I arrived earlier. And I haven't seen him come out."
"Maybe something happened? Cap has usually come out by now." Hawkins piped up again, "I havent seen Byrne either this morning. Maybe he's sick?"
"Byrne has never been sick in his life." Flynn snapped back.
"Thats statistically impossible." Brice closed his jacket and moved closer to Bellingham. The station was awfully cold this morning, "And while he may have gotten sick. Byrne takes his job very seriously and would have given proper notice."
Flynn opened his mouth to retort but the sound of a door opening quietened all of them. There was a murmur and then all of them filed out to start roll call. Byrne was there but... still no sight of their captain. Hawkins leaned forward to ask but stood back when Captain Maes appeared in the doorway.
Bob tilted his head to the side slightly. Their Captain certainly didn't look happy. In fact, Maes looked damn miserable. There was a slight shiver that the Captain tried to supress as he called off the names and gave everyone their duties for the day. Bob continued to watch him until Maes disappeared back into the office. Door swinging back into place, Brice went to the squad to check the drug box and kept his voice low,
"He looks bad. We should see if he'll let us examine him." Bob shifted to the side, checking the other equipment.
"...I think the cold is getting to him. It's probably making him grumpy and stiff."
"He's not that old Bellingham."
"I don't mean that. He's a wyvern. They don't breath fire. They stay cold and have to warm up. Thats why you dont see them up north." Bob glanced over the Squad at the door again, "I'll go see if he needs anything. He's probably in a bad mood." Ahh yes. They would probably be seeing all sorts of things until the temperature got back to normal. Hopefully the Captain would be okay though.
Brice closed the doors on the Squad and nodded, "If you need something-"
"Should be okay. Go check on Byrne. He looked tired."
Brice nodded and went to find their senior lineman. Bob walked up to the door, rapping his knuckles on the wood. There was gruff bark and Bob entered. There was a wave of heat that greeted him and Maes huddled behind the desk with a coat wrapped around him.
"Can I help you Bellingham?" Maes cocked an eyebrow, placing the pen he held down. There was a flash of irritation as the door closed but it quickly disappeared. Bob looked back and then leaned against the cabinet,
"I was going to ask you same thing Cap. You're holed up in here. Just wanted to make sure you're okay." Bob lazily looked at his hands before flicking back to his Captain. Maes frowned,
"I'm fine Bellingham. Its just cold and I'm trying to warm up." As evidenced by the two space heaters warming the office. "I wasn't prepared for this kind of weather and not everyone has a pilot light that keeps them 4 degrees above standard body temp at all times."
"...having this many heaters in an area this small is probably against fire code." A smirk played across Bob's lips, "You can turn up the heat in the station. The others are cold as well. You're not gonna run me out."
"Nothing could run you out Bellingham." Maes leaned back, flicking one of the heaters off, "Yeah, lets turn up the heat. Can't have cold firefighters. They'll be standing around singing kumbayah, trying not to get wet."
"Jak would fight that fire by himself and you know it. A tenacity that is only rivaled by Brice's for organization." Bob laughed and nodded. He pushed himself straight up and then pressed his hands on the desk, looking his Captain dead in the eyes.
"Captain Maes. Are you well enough to continue with your duty or am I going to have to call Rampart to continue treatment?" Bellingham knew that if Maes wasn't getting warm enough then it could cause a whole host of problems and to hell if he was going to allow that. Maes looked his senior paramedic in the eyes, hands clasping in front of him,
"Paramedic Bellingham. I am fine and my body temperature is now within acceptable paramet-"
They were interrupted when Byrne came through the door with a mug of steaming coffee. He looked between the two and sat it down in front of Maes, seemingly unaffected by the tension in the room.
"Drink that and get out here. I know you're warm enough now. The heat has been turned up." He gave a pointed look at Maes and then left. Maes took a sip and smirked,
"Well... I think this has been settled. If i start feeling bad I'll let you know Bob. But rest assured, Byrne will be keeping an eye on me. I can promise you that. Once the runs start it'll get my blood pumping. No worries." Bob nodded, turning the heater off as Maes rose from his chair. Both left the Captain's office and tones sounded, summoning the Squad to a location.
"Work doesn't wait. Get going boys." Maes responded to call and waved them off. Not even the cold was going to stop them.
