Stay With Me Chapter 3
The funeral was quiet. Not a lot of people showed up, but it was nice, as far as funerals go. There was Abby and Vince, their parents, my grandparents flew in from New York, and there was a range of my mom’s closest friends. I don’t really remember much of what happened, except that I completely lost it when they started lowering the casket. I had never thought that my mom would go so soon. I mean I had heard stories of other parents dying in tragic ways, but I never thought it would happen to me.
After the funeral Vince Abby and I all piled into Vince’s car and drove to the nearest Sonic. Vince and Abby were quiet sitting in the car, while I on the other hand just wanted to talk. Not about my mom, just about anything. I needed to laugh and I needed to get my mind off of what had happened. I wanted to forget.
“So what are you going to do now Mags?” Abby asked.
“What do you mean?” I asked sipping my slushy.
“I mean,” She said turning around in the passenger seat to face me, “Where are you going to live?” “You could always come live with me and my family,” Vince said.
“Or you could live with me!” Abby chirped, I could tell she was excited about the idea.
“Thanks guys, but there’s a court hearing tomorrow and they’re going to read my mom’s will. We’ll see who she left me with then.” I said. I was guessing it was probably Vince’s parents. I mean I don’t really know who else she would trust to raise me. But I didn’t really have a lot more time anyways. I was a junior in high school so I only had to survive the rest of this year and all of next year then I’d be free at college.
“Hey Abby, do you think it’d be okay if I spent the night at your house? I don’t really want to be alone” I asked.
“God Mags, of course! I’ll text my parents and let them know.” She said pulling her phone out of her purse.
Later that night Abby and I were hanging out in her room listening to John Mayer and just talking.
“…And then she was talking to me and asked me if Vince and I were dating! Can you believe that?” she laughed. Apparently she had gone to a party when she was off visiting her Dad one town over and she had met some girl that knew Vince, and she thought that based on the way he talked about her that they were dating.
“Well it’s not that hard to believe, I mean you do hang out all the time and you know he’s so in to you.” I said.
“Well yeah we hang out all the time, but you’re always there too, and he’s always been into me. It doesn’t mean I’m into him. I wouldn’t date Vince; I’ve been friends with him for too long.”
We talked for a little bit longer, until I fell asleep.
The next day I got up before Abby and looked in the mirror.
Ew was all I thought. I quickly fixed myself up and put on my skinny jeans, casual white button down with the sleeves rolled up and my fringe boots. I walked down stairs and saw Abby’s mom sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee. She stood up when she saw me.
“Hey Maggie, how are you doing today?” she asked, pulling me into a hug.
“Well considering I just got up and I haven’t really done anything yet, I would say I’m doing quite well.” I said smiling. It was nice they way she cared so much. If this whole will thing went according to my plan I would be able to think of her as my second mom, not that I didn’t already.
“That’s good, I was just about to make some pancakes, did you want any?” she asked.
“Um, no that’s ok. I really should get going. Vince said he would pick me up in a half hour and bring me to the court house.” “Alright darling, good luck over there, no matter what happens all of us in this house love you” she said kissing the top of my head.
I walked out the front door and waited for Vince to show up. When he did he gave me the same talk Abby’s mom had.
“You know Mags, if you don’t like that they put you with Abby you could always come stay with me. I’m sure my parents wouldn’t mind at all, you’re like the daughter they never had”
“Thanks Vince,” I said. “But I don’t even know if I’m going to be with Abby, I don’t know if I’m going to be with you either. It could be anyone,” I said. I really hope it wasn’t just anyone.
Vince pulled into the parking lot of the courthouse a few minutes later and turned to look at me.
“I’m going to be at the shops down the street, okay? Text me if you need anything” he said. I nodded and got out of the car. I walked into the courthouse and was directed to a big room with rows of seats and a judge. I sat down next to my grandma, who was still dressed in all black and had a handkerchief in case she started crying again. The judge started to drone on and on about how it was such a loss and how she sent her condolences to the family. It wasn’t really anything I hadn’t heard before. Onece she got down to business I got interested. I learned that the bank had taken the title of the house, so no one could really get it. Her car was a lease so no one got that either, I was a little bummed. I got possession of all her jewelry, and then it came time to see who got custody of me.
“The custody of Margret Ruth Stone, as decided by the deceased and the court goes to Lou Teasdale, Aunt of the child and sister of the deceased.”
