Pepper was shaken - she’d gotten another death threat that morning.  Stark Industries had gotten unpopular since the whole Ultron mess and people seemed to think Pepper was somehow responsible, even though Tony had very little to do with the company anymore and the two of them were no longer a couple.  She was determined to go to work anyway, to not let it bother her... even though she was very, very frightened.

When she arrived, she was surprised to find Tony waiting for her.  It had been a while since she’d seen him.  He’d been busy with other things.  “Good morning,” she said.  “I wasn’t expecting to see you.”

Toni rubbed a hand over her face and slid lower in her chair with a sense of irritated frustration. This project was not going as she wanted. Not even remotely. Sure, it was nice and all, and any normal person would deem the progress outstanding, but she just plain didn’t agree. She wanted to get the grid up faster and this was not that. This was slow, time-consuming work, and every day she lagged, more potential disasters were going unmonitored. 

It didn’t please her even a little bit, and she scowled at the programming, shaking her head at JARVIS when he chimed in with a potential solution by way of routing through him. But no, she wouldn’t put that much extra on him, though his help had been invaluable thus far.

“Nah J, it’s fine, just... keep on keeping on and all that.” 

So, of course, the moment she decided she might be able to get back to work had to be the moment some guy came stumbling out of fucking thin air in the middle of her workshop. No one could blame her for the immediate glow in her hands as she pushed her chair so she was clear of all solid objects. “The actual fuck is this?!”

“Shouldn’t you be in bed?” Natalia asked with an arched brow and a playfull smirk playing in the corners of her lips as she walked into the lab. The redhead was about to head off for the night when she noticed the lights still on. She sat down on top of one of the lab desks, her thigh almost touching Tony’s shoulder with the close proximity between their bodies “It’s way past your bed-time.”

“I don’t want to win. I just want to make the world a better place.”

“And that usually requires winning or at least some creative defeat.”  Rhodey replies, giving Tony an amused look.  “Wouldn’t do the world a load of good to have you dead after all.”

“Well you’d certainly know. Sure we had a dinosaur, but it was only one. Uh…ok, ok…one and a half. And we got them off right away. We didn’t let him twiddle his white, evil fingers and let him literally talk his way into a full scale alien invasion….” He said in a fast, bored voice. He cocked an eyebrow.

“Plus you can shoot sonic lasers out of your hands…” He finished, waving a finger at him.

“I can teach you several techniques that can help you manage not to throw things when you’re stumped,” Bruce said dryly. “What if it’s not an element we need? There are several isotopes we haven’t tried and possible permutations of known elements. Then there’s always discovering a new one that we won’t bother to name. I know you did that once, but it worked. We aren’t even close to exhausting all possibilities.” His fingers flew over the keys as he entered data. “I’m not ready to think of giving up when there are still things that I can try.”

Ally rolled her eyes when she heard Tony yelling. She could hear him all the way down the hall in her own room as he reamed out a most likely innocent agent. Placing her laptop to the side, Ally got off her bed and left her room, heading for the scene. She saw Tony, his back to her, and he was gesturing wildly-- a clear sign he was very angry. “Okay, let’s calm down,” she said as she took the final steps over. “What’s going on?” Like she normally did, Ally put two hands out, putting some space between Tony and his victim, and stepped in between them.
