“Do not go gentle into that goodnight” is such an ominous thing to use in Interstellar, and what makes it worse is Mann using it as Cooper is dying.
“Rage against the dying of the light” and “do not go gentle” become much harsher when you realize what exactly Mann did so he wouldn’t die “gently.” He raged against death by doing whatever he could to live, even if it meant leaving another human being to the same fate he was so terrified of. By faking the possibility of life on his planet, he could very well have doomed his entire species.
Mann embodied his name in the most brutal way, by descending into one of mankind’s most innate instincts: survival, whatever the cost.
