Because I cannot live only with thinly sliced beef. Sorry, it is hard to beat a good thick and juicy beef!

This is the real meal for beef lovers. Juicy, tender and medium rare - these are my preference choices for the best meat. A Japanese touch is added to this dish with wasabi, ponzu sauce and grated daikon as complements. I made some asparagus fried in butter as today's side dish - this combination is really tasty!

This dish is quite trivial to make if you’re used to grilling meat. 

Recipe (for two bowls)

1.5 cups of steamed rice.

1 beef steak (around 150g)

Salt

Pepper

Cooking oil

Wasabi

grated daikon and ponzu

Steps

Season both sides of the meat with salt and pepper.

Set a frying pan on medium heat. Leave it on the fire for some minutes until it starts smoking lightly.

Add cooking oil and swirl to distribute it evenly.

Add the meat and grill it. Keep flipping every 30 seconds until it reaches your desired point.

Remove the meat from the pan and let it rest for around 3 minutes.

Slice the meat.

Place the rice in a bowl.

Brush the juices from the pan over the hot rice, then place the meat on the top.

Serve the dish with wasabi, grated daikon and ponzu sauce.

Tips

I suggest choosing a tender meat cut that has a decent marbling. I suggest rump cap (the famous Brazilian picanha), rib eye or sirloin.

I suggest leaving it medium rare, which should take around total cooking time of 6 minutes.

after visiting the world famous Hikone castle...our lunch plan was Oyakodon, since we have had “enough(?)” omi beef this trip...but the restaurant had a day-off that day...so we had the steak-don again...still yummy...
