High hopes weren’t exactly expected for a Corporation small room gig on a Sunday evening, however my expectations were more than exceeded when I arrived to a packed out room full of fans who stayed from beginning to end.
First on the bill, South Yorkshire’s very own Dead Harts. Not a band I have personally listened to much and after hearing very mixed vibes and some not so positive reviews on their latest release, I was very unsure of what to expect from them. Turns out I was wrong to doubt them! Amazing stage presence right from the word go, definitely not a bad word to say about how they perform, however disappointingly very little crowd movement…but what can you expect when they’re first on the line-up and it’s a Sunday.
Steak Number Eight were a surprise for me. Having never heard of the band at all I stood very open minded. I was pretty fascinated by them in honesty with their soothing clean vocals yet husky voice and mostly instrumental performance. These definitely stood out to me, but I’m not sure if that was because they’re not a band I would typically expect to hear supporting Feed The Rhino and Dead Harts. Although once again having very little crowd participation, this didn’t seem to matter for SNE, as their performance to me was all about the pure skill of the musicians, not a game of how many people can you kick in the face in a pit.
Leeds based Marmozets are a band most of Yorkshire have heard of, let’s be honest. They’re definitely starting to make a name for themselves and I can see why. There are very few decent female screamers around, but Becca Macintyre is definitely an en exception, as she easily slips between clean vocals and screams with ease. Not only do they have an excellent stage presence, but for the final two songs Sam Macintyre (Guitar) could be found running around the crowd and rolling around on the floor on his back while still playing, now that takes some skill.
A dub-step intro left the crowd looking at each other puzzled as Feed The Rhino took to the stage. Vocalist, Lee Tobin is known for his habit of getting involved with fans and spending half the set performing in the crowd rather than on stage, however this seemed to be an exception. For the final song he had fans on stage jumping into the crowd, different. Without doubt the participation of the crowd was second to none, Everyone was singing along and there was no end to the circle pits, including a man in a banana suit and a morph suit throwing themselves around the mosh. Announcing this show was the best of the tour so far, they ended the set with a very pleased crowd. What a night.
