The whole idea of a steam console is weird, like I guess it can be an alternative to people who want to play games on steam but their PC is crap, but this console looks like it costs more than the xb1 and ps4, and most games are on both those and PC. I guess there's the steam exclusives, but I feel like getting a gaming PC is a better option if people have the money for it.
People will pay for convenience. You can either build a PC yourself for $600, or you can buy a pre-built PC with the same specs for $1000. Alienware’s made a long-standing business out of the latter.
You’re right, and a lot of those games will be on PS4 and Xbox One, they’ll probably look better on the Steam Console. From the sound of it, a lot of people are disappointed with what current-gen consoles can do when PC versions of all of this stuff still looked and ran better, even when the new consoles first launched.
I mean, remember the big fiasco about Watch_Dogs? If you believe the rantings of mad men online, Ubisoft deliberately crippled the PC version of Watch_Dogs because they were told not to make the console versions look bad. A decent PC already out performs those things. You’ll pay more for a Steam Console than a PS4 or Xbone, but you’ll probably get your money’s worth, too, as far as resolutions and framerates are concerned.
And the thing is, Valve’s also catering to people who just want to build their own gaming PC. You can pick up a Steam Link for $50 which is just a relay box that connects to your gaming PC and streams that output (Steam Big Picture Mode) to your TV, basically turning what you already have in to an on-demand Steam Console (assuming you don’t mind a little latency from the streaming).
But I’ll agree with you that I’m not sure the stand-alone Steam Console by itself is going to be a big hit. It’s a tough sell at the prices they’re listing. But, I guess we’ll see what happens. Again: people will pay for convenience.

Alongside all of the crazy Japanese things we expect to see at Tokyo Game Show next month, we’re adding one very American thing. Alienware will debut their Steam gaming console, the Alpha, at the September 18-21 event. It was shown off at E3 this year, but Alienware is going big for its Japan launch, with a large number of consoles available for the public to try out.

In other news, when steam release their game console I guarantee that it'll pretty much be the only system I play. As much as I want a PS4, the Steam console is pretty much everything I could want.
