Bed of Nails Balloon Experiment For Kids

It's time to investigate the fascinating science behind the well-known experiment of lying down on a bed of nails! You've probably seen your favorite circus acts or magicians perform the classic Bed of Nails trick, but what's the secret? You can see the science behind this trick by using a smaller version of the bed and a clear balloon.

This Bed of nails balloon experiment for kids activity turns the curiosity about how a person can sleep on a Bed of Nails into a fun learning STEAM activity.

How does the experiment with the bed of nails work? Let's Investigate the Interesting Science Behind the "Bed of Nails" Experiment

Step 1 Drill 98 holes in one of the wooden boards for the nails to be pushed through later.

Step 2 Drill two larger holes close to the edges on opposite sides of the wooden board and glue the wooden dowels in the holes.

Step 3 Drill two holes on the other wooden board that correspond to the positions of the dowels attached to the first board, allowing the board to slide along the dowels.

Step 4 Insert the nails into the 98 holes in the bottom board, making sure they are all level.

Step 5 Press the top wooden board with a balloon placed between the bed of nails and the upper wooden board.

Step 6 Shows that a great deal of force is required to pop the balloon.
