The Beanery - Edward Kienholz, 1965

Deze installatie is er één die je met bijna al je zintuigen kan bewonderen. Zelf heb ik hem in 2019 mogen bezoeken in het Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Wanneer je binnenloopt in de nauwe ruimte, zo’n 2 meter breed, maak je gelijk kennis met de onaangename geur van, zoals Kienholz het heeft bedacht, bier, vet, urine, mottenballen en sigarettenas. Daarbij hoor je het gemoedelijke geluid van de originele bar, opgenomen door Kienholz zelf. De installatie is namelijk een kopie op tweederde schaal van Barney’s Beanery uit Los Angeles. De combinatie van geur, geluid en het algehele beeld van het werk laten je voelen alsof je er echt bent.

Op één persoon na hebben alle beelden in de bar een klok als hoofd. De klokken staan stil op 09:50, de wijzers als wenkbrauwen dienende. De stilstaande klokken symboliseren dat de tijd stil staat in het café. De gasten komen hier in een poging de werkelijkheid voor even te kunnen ontsnappen. Waarom ze dat nodig vinden, is de onrust die in die tijd heerste in de wereld, laat Kienholz buiten de bar zien. Op een rekje ligt daar een krant met als kop: Children kill children in Vietnam Riots, wat tevens ook de aanleiding was voor Kienholz om in 1965 deze installatie te maken. 

Na me op ieder van de 7 meter te vergapen aan alle versieringen aan de wand en de verontrustende klokgezichten werd het me toch te benauwd. Ik liep de installatie weer uit, om zo de bargasten en hun escapistische drang achter me te laten, weer terug de echte wereld in.

The sky is thin as paper here… but what is beyond it? What do all these shapes and colors mean, why the artsy fake ceilings, do they actually mean skies? Are they hung up there above your head to stop your imagination or to guide it further and higher? Why do modern artists have to explain their mind at length, while classical art comes without a user manual? Why does modern art want to tell you something, instead of masterfully playing with chiaroscuro and arcane layering techniques? Why did one want to impress while the other tries to guide? When did the concept of art and its role in our lives change, and so dramatically? When did literature and social critique become art? And what’s left of the good old heartwarming happiness in front of a rainy landscape, when did it get substituted by brainy worries about overpopulation or climate change? At least you can have a local Vollenhoven&co Extra Stout right in front of Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum and let its crunchy bitter chill calm down your stormy thoughts, and let them find a quieter way, hopefully your way. Because through many doors you can come in, but through one you will arrive. And modern art wants to bring you closer to that one door. 

…even if all you can see is a… black shoe?!
