What do you think is the reason for the nickname “the sweet” in asoiaf? Namely, “Sweet” Donnel Hill of the Nights Watch, and Steffon “the sweet” Frey?

I can think of a couple different things: 1) Romantic love 2) General affection 3) The person is tender-hearted 4) The person is naïve or child-like (if not actually a child) 5) The person is unpleasant and was given the nickname in jest 6) The person is (or was previously) known for their love of sweets

Regarding “Sweet” Donnel Hill and Steffon “the Sweet” Frey, do you think it’s an ironic sobriquet hinting at a more suspect nature underneath, or is it meant to be sincere a la Garlan “the Gallant”?

Given who’s referring to them as that I think it’s mostly supposed to be ironic, but also a reference to them being better looking than their peers.
