A request for the upcoming Steggy Week:

Please just tag if you've used generative AI (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, etc) to create or in any way augment your work?

Allow the rest of us the dignity of choice when it comes to interacting with AI works, please.

I'm not speaking as a mod for the @steggyfanevents, just as a fic writer and member of this little fandom. (The events blog does not currently have a policy on AI use in Steggy Week.) Please tag if you've used AI.

I'm not super interested in posting a long screed as to why I personally am opposed to and offended by the use of generative AI in fanwork specifically and creative work generally. You cannot be a person online the way people in fandom are online and not have encountered the numerous ethical, environmental and legal arguments against the use of generative AI.

(I have a child, I want her to have unlimited access to drinkable water and a habitable planet for her entire (hopefully long) life. My spouse works in the arts and career change is a nightmare in the best of times, a horror show these days. No authors, published or otherwise, have been compensated for their work being stolen to train these LLMs that their (already huge, multi-billion dollar) companies are now profiting from. Using AI has been shown to decrease one's power to goddam think critically, something that was already in pretty short supply.)

I obviously think you just shouldn't use AI to make anything for Steggy Week, period. But if you do, please just give me (and anyone else reblogging/liking this post) a heads up that you have. Thanks.

Steve knew what it meant to be sick. As a child, he had missed more days of school than he could count, his asthma making every cold or flu more difficult to recover from. When Howard’s experiment had worked, the first thing he realized was how easy it was to breathe. He hadn’t been sick during the war, not even when pneumonia took out half the Howling Commandos for a week in the winter of 1943. Howard had hypothesized that a stronger immune system was another result of the serum, but they hadn’t needed to test his theory since he had pulled Steve out of the ice six months earlier.
