Wait wait wait wait hang on— Very late night thoughts.
So that scene where Steinbeck swears revenge against Fitzgerald. He swears revenge while watching the Moby Dick sink. Moby Dick, who is one of the most infamous symbols of the perils of revenge in literature. Moby Dick, who famously tore off Captain Ahab’s leg, and BSD!Steinbeck who casts off his crutches and binds his injured leg right in the very same scene.
I can only wonder what this means if it’s foreshadowing. From a Doylist perspective, it’s obvious that Steinbeck’s quest for revenge will go nowhere and he will lose against Fitzgerald/join forces with him and/or be redeemed. Still, the parallels and resulting possibilities are interesting.
